How to Break into Data Science in 2021 (5 Steps)

Sorry about the choppy audio towards the end! I've been having on and off microphone problems.

All credit goes to Videvo for video clips.

In this video, I talk about how to break into data science in the year 2021, suppose if you're a complete beginner who's just starting out. This is a lucrative field and as the economy recovers from the illness over the course of the year and many things become increasingly digitized, there remains little doubt that data science will be in enormous demand!

Here are five steps:

1) Receive some form of accreditation, whether that is a college degree, or Coursera or other types of certification
2) Learn the (right) material!
3) Practice your skills. Some ways include: internships, projects at school, or Kaggle competitions
4) Build a portfolio
5) Get that job!

I work in data but don’t have a degree, everyone else i work with does, only my direct boss knows i don’t, never lied, just never been asked, everything I’ve learned is self taught and experience luckily i can apply what I’ve learnt while graduates have the knowledge but struggle to actually solve problems and with patience and apply problem solving in a practical real world way.

HAHAhahaha! Data pseudoscience. Thats hillarious. I love your videos and your inconspicuous sense of humor. I have NO idea why you don't have 1Mil views/subscribers yet even though you're relatively new. You're doing everything you should be, so I'm sure it'll come soon. I should be finishing up a couple of your R tutorials for my school project ASAP, but ended up here on break. I appreciate your succinct yet extremely thorough teaching style. I would join your Patreon, but I'm still just a full-time student. I may anyway because your channel is definitely worth a goshdarn. See you in about a millisecond because I'm off to your other video.

Great content Richard. Your videos are enlightening.

I've left two graduate programs now that basically handed over a word document and wanted a fairly simple assignment back. Looking more at certifications because that isn't learning to me.

@richardondata Please do a video on the difference between Data Analysis and Data Science, and what it takes to be a Data Analyst

Great video, Richard! What services do you think are in demand for a data science business or for an entrepreneurial endeavor?

Are there businesses that specialize in analyzing other businesses info? Or are businesses tending to hire their own data scientists, internally? Which do you think is more so?
If d.s. is an employee centric career path, as opposed to something one can create a sole-tradership/self-employed daily work revenue stream from, then I think that's an important point to mention (sorry you do mention this a bit at 11:30).
Some skills inherit self-employment more than others. For example, an architect, a lawyer or a GP. Other skills, such as project management, electrical engineering, mechatronic engineering, business adminstration lend themselves to employee centric (note my bias, how the hell would I know). But I think you can spread the two. How does data science compare to computer programming in so far as which one has the best self-employed potential?
Great channel. High quality.

Thanks for these videos, Richard. I wanted to ask if you have heard of the data science learning platform called DataQuest and if you have, what you think about it. The platform has a learning path called Data Analyst with R which I'm currently using to learn R.

Ok, if I hear you right, the progression of sequence is:
Statistics >> SQL >> Python|R
Is that correct?

Thanks for laying out this curriculum. Given your current involvement in the DS and AI industry I would like to ask your opinion on AutoML tools out there. At what point do you think a ds learner can start using them?

Hey Richard! Nice video. I'm going to follow this video to enable my data science journey. By the way, do you offer mentoring of any sort?

Hi Rich, I’m physics major with minors in DS, economics, and math. I have more python experience than R. I know how to write LM models in R, and do data wrangling in python. I plan to get a masters in statistics, do you think I need it?

Incredible video. Something I am interested in is in certifications different to Coursera. There is something similar to the Cisco certifications in Networking, but applied to Data Science?
