hi again mat and ash! its me, co creator of DOORS 😁really enjoying the videos! i want to give some developer tips though since it seems you guys are having a difficult time.... (if you dont want my help and want to play blind then just dont read) anyways thanks to you guys so much for playing and im over the moon that you two are giving the game so much time even though it takes quite a while to play!

1. the crucifix works on every entity except for Snare (the trap in the greenhouse), Timothy, and Jack (and the docile entities in jeff shop, duh). however, it wont get rid of all of them permanently...
2. hitting ANY movements keys (WASD) while in a wardrobe, especially during the figure heartbeat minigame, will immediately make you exit the wardrobe. i think you should use left click / right click instead of Q / E for the heartbeat minigame as you seem to keep accidentally brushing past the movement keys and exiting the wardrobe during that minigame which is messing up your runs a little bit...
3. room 100 is HUGE, it seemed like mat didn't notice that he was just in a very dark hallway when he died, and could've just turned around and gone the other way away from the figure instead of walking into it.
4. the only use for coins after jeff shop is for extra knobs when you die, so unless you just want the knobs i dont recommend looting everything for coins. however i think you should start buying a flashlight and lighter at the beginning of the game with your knobs cause it seems like you are in the dark a lot... 😅(it will help so much)
5. you can only revive once in a run, and you cant revive past the loreyard(courtyard). we didnt want to add revives at all originally, but it was requested so much that we just put it behind a small paywall to support us since the game is 100% free 😁i hope that you can understand that and we appreciated you supporting us by purchasing some! also, if you die within 15 seconds of using a revive it will not consume it and you can use it again next time you die.
6. when ash had disconnected around room 40 as they said, this is a default thing in roblox where if no input is detected by the player for 15 minutes it will boot you to save resources. unfortunately theres nothing we can do about that and we think its super dumb... but you can solve this problem just by tapping W or clicking once every 5-10 minutes to reset the 15 minute timer
7. el goblino and bob told me to say hi (interacting with bob does nothing... hes not much of a talker)


edit: oh and bonus tip the rooms is extremely hard and you are gonna die a lot but something tells me the most interesting part about the rooms to mat will be dying

I don’t know if they figured this out but the candle item has an ability where the flame will go out when an entity is coming/there. Its extremely helpful for those last 10 doors since it provides light and a warning. Candles are usually found on top of the tables :)

To help you explain what happened on 52:48:
1. You entered the closet, triggering the heartbeat minigame
2. You *exited the closet*, causing the Figure to attack you
3. The crucifix gets activated to prevent the Figure from killing you
4. The Figure is stunned, and is breaking from the crucifixes entrapment. You tried walking past the figure, although you had the option to go the opposite way
5. The Figure broke free, killing you instantly
I am so sorry for what happened there, although the motto of Doors is trial and error. What determines the winner is who stays determined!

Tips and tricks :
- Fake doors make a growling noise.
- The figure isn't quite as smart as you might think. Just crouch and you'll be fine. Avoid lockers as they are harder than just moving out of his way. Door 100 is formed like an infinity sign with a few rooms along it. The figure NEVER goes in the rooms. So just stick around those rooms and you'll be fine.
- A-000 has 1000 doors... it'll take you about 2-3 hours...

What's interesting is that the herb in the infirmary that heals you over time is locked behind a door that can't be lockpicked despite it probably being extremely useful in healing wounds during a war when the hotel was supposedly getting haunted. It's also interesting that later on you find a greenhouse with a bunch of plants and herbs that the entities frequent for some reason, maybe they could be attempts to replicate the herb??

Few things that I want Mat to know. FIRST, in the room 100 incident where you are running away, there was a hallway behind you to escape, SECOND, you don't NEED to do the closet minigame as I originally thought. If you keep running around the hallways he will lose you soon enough even if you don't go in a closet because of the extra speed given to you in that chase.

Here is basically all you need to know about the Rooms.

You need 2 lockpicks and a skeleton key to access it.
It has 1000 rooms, but you can exit prematurely through exit doors that start appearing after door 200.
There are three entities there, A-60, A-90 and A-120
The Crucifix does not work.
You can't revive in the rooms.


Now for some lore...

The entitiy that talks to you when you die is named "Curious Light", instead of guiding light, and he doesn't give you tips. Instead he tells you to come back to the rooms if you die.

As someone who’s a kindergarten teacher, believe me Mat. We also don’t think 4 year olds should be allowed into a classroom with other kids who are already 5 or even close to being 6. There is such a big gap in maturity for those ages, no matter if the child is “advanced.”

I appreciate Ash bringing in all the nostalgic references this episode, they know what memories to unlock with ease. Especially the Barbie movies, cause that courtyard absoltuely looks like it'd be in one of the early movies (circa Princess and the Pauper, or 12 dancing princesses era)

The conversation about how separate Ollie’s school life is reminded me that MatPat is an only child. I had the same sort of realization about my brothers. How they were somewhere else in the same building, doing something I dont know about, unrelated to any context in which I’m familiar with them. And sometimes in the halls I’d look for their classroom, maybe see if I could see them in the room and see what they’re doing. It’s definitely strange and it makes you wonder. On top of that, I’m in my own little world at school - my brothers aren’t there with me in my class or in the other room doing the same thing. But walking around the halls in middle school and suddenly my big brother is there, on his way to his own class, and it felt a little bizarre - like worlds were colliding.

I don't think Matpat is gonna be too happy when he finds out the secret entrance in room 60 leads to a new area with 1, 000 rooms to get through.
Also watch him get to this new area then take one of the exit doors by mistake and return back to the hotel undoing everything he just accomplished.

43:42 I think I have an explanation for this.

Since certain rooms are longer than others, and because Rush spawns at the room that will be de-spawned next, the timing between Rush and getting to a closet can be weird. And especially in doors 90-100, since the rooms are longer, and often don’t make u-turns, it is harder to pick up on the audio queue for Rush. Usually, as I’ve noticed, Rush sounds a lot closer (louder) when the past room seems to u-turn the same direction you came from. If the same logic is applied to rooms that don’t turn back, Rush will sound further (quieter).

I’ve died SO many times because of Rush being too far away to determine if he’s there or not. But I’m guessing it’s a hard thing to fix, since Rush doesn’t come to your current room at the exact same time, every time. So it’s really just bad luck, and it’s quite uncommon to encounter. But yeah, it annoys me too.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone struggle or find as many bugs as matpat does in this game. I've seen playthough after playthrough, and played it myself, yet matpat still finds ways to die in doors.

important note: once you die your stuff doesn't just disappear anymore and instead just drops on the floor (mainly so other people can pick your stuff up) but if you revive you can still pick your stuff back up

Figure is infuriating, but the number 1 thing you don't want to do is jump in a wardrobe. It's super counterintuitive, but if you jump into a wardrobe, he will always come to it and start the minigame. Just run away and then stay crouched and he'll leave you alone.
This was great, can't wait for you to check out the Rooms.

Totally here for the vocabulary discussion. I had these workbooks in middle school that focused on Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Basically just like Mat described: gives you the building blocks of words so that if you encounter one you don't know, you can take it apart and figure it out. Made my SAT/ACT verbal section MUCH easier. I want to find those to use when homeschooling my kids when they're old enough.

Also: the words I always associate as vocabulary quiz words are peri-/para- words like perimeter and paralegal.
