This is crazy, how much the Outlander producers pay attention to the smallest details. This song has been chosen by Roger on purpose, because he's singing for Brianna. There is this sentence "how many strawberries grow in the salt sea" which is hard to understand. One of the explanations is that the strawberries are for a Celtic clan coming from an old French place, these people called themselves "les gens de la fraise" (which means "the people of the strawberry") and the name of the clan is, of course, the Fraser !

Can't get over Richard Rankin's voice and mad skills with the guitar. The perfect Roger Mac! <3

You can see this is the moment Bree really falls in love with Roger though she wasn't really ready for marriage so fast. But you could see it in her face that she really fell for him. It was so sweet when she pulled out the drawing of her and Roger.

My heart melted. He is a handsome lad, a Scotch and a good singer.
Don't worry Roger, if Bree doesn't want to marry ya, I will.

Can we get an album of all the songs Richard and the others sing on the show? S.5 Ep. 8 had three beautiful songs sung by the cast and I want those so bad!!

I once loved a lass
I loved her sae weel
I hated all others who spoke of her ill
But now she's rewarded me well for my love
For she's gone to be wed to another

I saw my love to the church go
With bridesgroom and bridesmaidens they made a fine show
And I followed on with my heart full of woe
She was gone to be wed to another

I saw my love sit down to dine
As I sat down beside her I poured out the wine
I drank to the lassie that should have been mine
Even though she'd been wed to another

The men o' the forest
They ask it o' me
How many strawberries grow in the south sea?
I answer them a' with a tear in my ee'
How many ships sail in the forest

I always play this scene back over again when I watch the episode, he sings so beautifully, it's captivating how he performs this song. Big bravo to you Richard! We ladies want more, but unfortuneately where we are in Season 5, he can no longer do this. Mr Rankin, put out a CD of ballads, it will sell, we love your singing and your acoustic guitar.

I’m obsessed with this song! I’ve gone through all the covers I could find because this one hadn’t been posted yet... This one’s my favorite, though. ‘Roger’ has such a beautiful voice

Beautiful song and his accent makes me go weak at the knees! He is my favourite character in the show now and I love him and Bree together.

OMG, Rik Rankin absolutely killed on this song -- incredible! I listened to many other versions here and this one leaves them all in the dust -- even the ones by Pentangle and the irreplaceable Sandy Denny. That's quite an achievement!

I've listened to 12 versions of this song and keep coming back to this one. His voice is so beautiful!
