How good is my French after 6 months? Well...you may be surprised to hear that I can't speak French after 6 months in the language. Learning French without speaking was my plan from the start, bu this video is one example why learning a language doesn't mean speaking necessarily. Instead, I've been focused on learning French grammar. That said, how is my French grammar?

I want to learn French next year - more than I've learned this year. I'm not fluent in French yet, nor would I expect myself to be. I study Greek because I’m an orthodox Christian and we have Greek, Russian, Romanian, etc... people come to our church (our church is Orthodox, but 100% English speaking in the liturgy). I decided to start with Greek and mostly I am only concerned with comprehension. I like to be able to greet the Greeks at Church in Greek when I see them, but mostly I interact in Greek with people on YouTube and Facebook. Of course it also helps in reading the original text of the Apostles and the liturgy we do also. I think comprehension is by far the most significant thing for me to enjoy the fruits of my labor though.

You've made great progress, i'm french and i'm just able to see and understand without subtitles english movies ... ^^ already a big step, but ... i can't discuss in english very fluently, i've to work for it ;)

Languages are counted in hours, not in months hehe! Great video! Btw... you are american, right? That's something that makes your progress slower than someone who speaks Italian, Portuguese or Spanish for example. I'm not a big fan of apps, but they do help to boost the language.

Honestly, i have tried duolingo for german, russian, spanish and Norwegian. Most of my experience was just for fun and exploration. I'm not certain that it's good. It's not awesome. At some point you need real world practice, because apps teach you how to speak with apps, not real people with strong accent.. I suggest you to try to talk with at least 1 maghrebin, 1 center african, 1 swiss/belge/france and 1 quebecois. You can also try with one of you USA Accadien from Louisiana and if you can find 1, try to talk with at least one from Canada/Newfoundland.

I went from really slow learning with apps in 2 years. 2 years wasted. Stop with all the apps. They are useless except for one thing. Helping you to get the daily habit. As soon as you know around 400 - 500 words (maybe 2 or so months) you should start reading as much as you can and as often as you can. Get yourself some reading materials for your level and a little above it, and just keep reading, hours upon hours upon hours. And when you're done reading, you need to double down and read a humungous amount more. Then read the same thing 20 times more. Understanding language is about understanding context not words. So read stuff that interests you, where the context of stuff really matters because you're interested. If you can find audio assisted reading materials all the better. Read out loud with them. You might, be pretty OK after about 2 years of that, if you read every day. By the time you get to B2 level, all the stuff you just did in this video will seem miniscule in comparsion.

The main mistake i see with english mixing with french is the use french words on an english sentence structure. It makes funny things and does not always make sense. Also, modifying English words to sound français. Exemple: actuellement/actually. They do not have the same meaning but we hear a lot of people these days using actuellement but for the english meaning.
