Mogwai's latest album sees the famed (mostly) instrumental rock band incorporating a lot more synths and electronics with some mixed results.

What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

FAV TRACKS: DEESH, MASTERCARD, REMURDERED, NO MEDICINE FOR REGRET

LEAST FAV TRACK: REPELISH

MOGWAI - RAVE TAPES / 2014 / ROCK ACTION / POST-ROCK, PROGRESSIVE SYNTH, PROGRESSIVE ROCK, INSTRUMENTAL ROCK WITH ELECTRONIC FUSION MAGIC

6/10

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?

I was pretty impressed with this album at first. Then I listened to some of their previous work, and I can understand why a lot of people found Rave Tapes underwhelming. They raised the bar HIGH!

You not mention the song "No Medicine for Regret" from this album? I think it is the absolute standout almost perfect song. Classic Mogwai song turned into their new direction. I hope this song is the precursor to what next next album will sound like. Thoughts?

Interesting Story about Mogwai, Guitarist Stuart Braithwaite was heading into a local guitar store in Glasgow, not sure what he was picking up or he was just browsing but was told to leave the store as a member of a british pop band called Blue was going to the store, at the time the store stocked the Mogwai signature Big Muff Pedal LOL

I really like this album

the song 'remurdered' really sets the scene of an outer space/ foreign planet setting that kinda paints a picture in your mind

are clearly a Mogwai fan. On a bit of a mogwai binge atm in anticipation of the new album and completely agree with most of your opinions, reluctantly! New found respect with your reviews and I will pay more attention in future purely based on the fact I can see you're actually bothered and excited about releases like this. High fives, keep up the good work and will look forward to seeing what you make of the new album.

i love you. long time since a saw a good review like yours. i really like the album, but mainly i love it because it's much like everything that already came out from mogwai. didn't get me to a heart attack, but still very nice and most of all very mogwai.

Bohren & der Club of Gore - "Piano Nights"

I felt that the main theme of the album was - Post Rave Comedown music :D Especially with the synths, they sound like late 90s early 00s Fruity Loops type synths on a PC. :D

revisiting this record...The Lord is Out of Control is such a great track. It makes me feel way more than any other one on this record. The chord resolutions and parts just go together wonderfully. Nils Frahm's remix is also so beautiful. I wonder if this track has grown on you Anthony?

I honestly quite enjoyed this album. Where Hawk is Howling feels like a sub-par Hardcore will never die, but you will; Rave Tapes feels like something different. Less violin and stuff because it is a different mood. Although it may not be at its full potential, it's a very good album.

it was a good album, not their best, but the hawk is howling is not underwhelming really. I really liked it.

I went to a Mogwai concert where they played this entire album. It was the loudest concert I've ever been to but damn if it wasn't worth the 2-day hearing loss.

I agree with you on your opinion on "rave tapes". I guess I've been expecting more from Mogwai.

It's another Mogwai album.  Which is awesome because Mogwai.  But also kind of meh because it doesn't reach any new heights.  It sounds like they're in a holding pattern but "oh looky there, we found this synthesizer in the back guys!"

That being said, The Lord is Out of Control is truly a great song.

Saw these guys at the weekend, was a really great gig. Sound was so rich and big! Stand out tracks, How To Be A Werewolf, Remurdered, Auto Rock, Mogwai Fear Satan

This album is a grower. Once you give it at least 2 or 3 full listens, it becomes a truely great Mogwai record. It doesn't deserve all of the bad/average reviews.
