Election season has kicked off in the Philippines, and the race for the presidency is heating up. As the deadline to announce candidacies ends, voters now have a clearer picture of who's running for the top job in 2022.

President Rodrigo Duterte maintains high popularity among the electorate, but is constitutionally barred from pursuing a second term. At least half a dozen candidates are expected to vie for his spot, including newly retired boxing icon and senator Manny Pacquiao and incumbent Vice President Leni Robredo, head of the country's largest opposition party.

Other possibilities include Duterte’s daughter Sara, mayor of the southern city of Davao, and Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., the son of the Philippines' former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, both of whom are leading in the polls.

Interest in the upcoming election is high, with more than 63 million people registered to vote so far – half of those under 40 years old. For many, top issues include getting the pandemic under control, boosting the economy, and resolving a long-standing dispute with China.

In this episode of The Stream we ask, who will succeed Rodrigo Duterte as president of the Philippines?

The real problem of our country are the people it self. We all put the burden to the government without doing our part. We just put so much complaints without doing action. Specially those politicians who are only after with the power without thinking their purpose of serving the nation.

If there's something wrong with our democracy, It is that we Filipinos don't know how to use our freedom responsibly.

The host should have invited representatives from both sides to have a better and balanced dialogue.

I like Jose Ramon Albert, he's somewhat of a realist towards the filipino psyche

A lot of people are unfortunately still living in the past…I feel like the ‘young and first time voters’ will significantly shape the future of the country. Filipinos must free their minds and know that they are not a slave of their past which is still hunting them up to this point that’s causing mistrust, hate and division. Come together, learn to trust and be optimistic of the future. The future is assured and all is well…❤️❤️❤️

We can’t sacrifice the future so we need to stop the oligarcs that are still working on the young minds. Duterte Admin did the best and I salute of his courageous against the big companies that did not pay their taxes. The media here are also biased. They have facts but for 30 years I think we really need to continue this changes.

If Sarah Duterte will not run as President, I'm pretty sure that Bongbong Marcos will be the next president of the Philippine Republic!!!!

Whoever may lead our nation I hope that whenever we make demands in their mistakes I hope they listen.

And next I hope that Filipinos learn critical thinking and put down their pride as a Filipino but rise their pride as a human being.

I'm from the Philippines and I just didn't expect that the philippines politics is something that matters into this international news agency...
But in my opinion if Sara duterte will decide to run for president, she has a better chance of winning than bong bong Marcos..

Sorry Rappler and Al jazeera the status of the Philippine economy is good now and the Philippines has the lowest COVID cases in ASEAN should shut down the media that tarnish the image of the Philippines abroad.

WHY YOUR GUESS ARE ALL ANTI GOVERNMENT OR ANTI ADMINISTRATION!?? Ofcourse they will never say good things about philippine government. But if you will just talk to ordinary people in philippines, you will get the true answer. Your guest are all critics of governmet. So what answer to expect from them? All criticism behind the good doing by government.
