Also, albeit harsh, but habitable Siberia lay across the Gobi desert, which was difficult to cross. For such a large China, this meant the impossibility of logistics and control. It is precisely because of this that China and Russia practically did not conduct military operations, since the occupation of their territories would always be more expensive than the benefits for the winner.

The russians did take outer manchuria (and technically mongolia) from china too before they managed to make forts there.

The Chinese, the Qing to be specific, did own outer Manchuria (the area around Vladivostok) and had frequent clashes with the Russians over the area during the transition from the Ming dynasty to the Qing dynasty. It was not until the decline of their dynasty when the Russians were able to successfully take the area.

Forgot to mention the historical presense of Nomads that were notoriously hard to route out. The pressense of these nomads would make settling to the north of China often more of a pain than it was worth.

The rumour has it that the word for the number 40, in Russian, comes from some word for fur/s, since it's not composed from a digit+tens(chetire-tsat') word, but a l single unit (sorok).

The parallels to the European colonization of North America are astounding. At about the same time they established colonies to garners furs on a land inhabited by the Indians. Note that native Siberians are the ancestors of the Amerindians!

That’s really similar to the early colonial days in Quebec. Fur was the main reason the french were here at all

The Russian expansion to the east originally started as a defensive move against the threat of hords and slave hunters in the caspian region.

Thought it was because of the mongols as to why Russia took Siberia, and China did lose Vladivostok and that area around it to Russia only 100 something years ago
