FINAL FANTASY X review, the first Final Fantasy game for the PlayStation 2! The adventures of Tidus, Yuna, Auron and the others has stayed in fans' hearts for decades since it came out. This review looks at its strong points, and where it falls flat.

Final Fantasy Xis a role-playing video game developed and published by Square as the tenth main entry in the Final Fantasy series. Originally released in 2001 for PlayStation 2, the game was re-released as Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in 2013, for PlayStation 4 in 2015, Microsoft Windows in 2016, and for Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in 2019. The game marks the Final Fantasy series transition from entirely pre-rendered backdrops to fully three-dimensional areas (though some areas were still pre-rendered), and is also the first in the series to feature voice acting. Final Fantasy X replaces the Active Time Battle (ATB) system with the "Conditional Turn-Based Battle" (CTB) system, and uses a new leveling system called the Sphere Grid.

Tidus is a summon, which is why you can name him at the start of the game. It's the biggest foreshadow that no one ever points out.

We actually first hear Tidus's name spoken verbally by Waka in Kingdom Hearts 1. I remember being so dumbfounded by it and thinking it was just Waka's accent lol.

"The laughing is forced and cringey... *because it's supposed to be.* "

THANK YOU.

"You never need Kimahri as a backup"
Actually, I always take him down Yuna's path so he can use cure while fighting Evrae while Yuna is kidnapped.

I'm surprised you didn't go into Tidus's relationship with Jecht as the game progresses. It's a big part of his character, and the ways his travels help him grow and reach a place where he can at least face his father instead of blindly hating him... it was really something.

Holy shit. “Ass and Tidus” just brought me back to sophomore year of high school on newgrounds. Thank you for that.

The biggest thing about the laughing scene in FFX is that *the characters literally start laughing at themselves normally right afterwards because of how silly they're being*. I really don't get how people can miss that.

Jared: "Each one of them is useful, likeable, and tied to the story."
Me: "HA!"
Jared: "Except for Kimahri."
Me: "There we go."

I will never stop laughing that Seymour's final plan is, in essence, "I will become sin and kill everyone to stop sin from killing everyone."

Since I was mostly alone growing up, this game made me feel like I had a family and friends. It will always have a special place in my heart.

As a film student, I can appreciate what you did with the “can’t unsee it” both about the game and the meta conversation

The “Tee-dus” pronunciation is because it’s derived from “tida”, the Okinawan word for the sun (to contrast Yuna’s moon theming). But I didn’t know that when I was a kid, so he’s still Tie-dus to me forever since that’s how I assumed it was pronounced.

Thank you so much ProJared for being one of the few youtubers to actually get the laughing scene correct. It always irritates me when people point it out to say how bad the voice acting was, but leaves out the context it was.

I actually always understood the laugh scene as Tidus being deliberate. He was in a bad mood, and Yuna was trying to cheer him up with some advice, but because Tidus is a bit immature and didn't know what to do, he sort of did the letter but not the spirit. Similar to how when I was a kid and was told to take a deep breath while annoyed, I would do it really fast and exaggeratedly as a sort of "Okay, fine, I'll do what you said but this is stupid and I'm not taking it seriously". So he's laughing badly *on purpose* from an in-story perspective, and Yuna decides to try to keep cheering him up by joining in as well as demonstrate how silly he sounds. Later in the scene they both start actually laughing, if I recall, and it is very natural sounding.

When’s the “Ass and Tidus” song going to be up on Spotify, iTunes and other digital retailers?

Jared, you handled the explanation of the laughing scene so well. I’ve heard that laugh countless times without ever knowing why it was happening, and your commentary on it nearly brought me to tears. Absolutely amazing job covering this game and the rest of the series. I can’t wait for more

"The laughing scene in ffx is one of the best moments"
THANK YOU. I have always hated seeing people take that scene out of context and laugh at it, it is one of my favorite scenes in the game.
