I had a Derecho that went through eastern South Dakota last year. And all I can say is I NEVER want to see one again for the rest of my life!

I went through the Midwest derecho in Marion (Cedar Rapids) in 2020 where the NWS estimated the top wind of this event a mile from my home of 140mph. It was terrifying. We lost roughly 60-70% of our tree canopy. Crews that normally do hurricane cleanup said they’ve never seen a storm do this much damage, much less one that wasn’t a hurricane.

I tried to find the radar picture I had of the derecho that devastated West Virginia....the storm on the radar was black and very eerie....I hope it doesn't happen here again in my lifetime

I was out driving around in the 2020 Iowa derecho. It honestly didn't seem all that crazy at first. The folks at the kwik star I pulled up to were all hunkered down behind the register counter. I was like "WTF?!" while they were trying to shout at me to get to shelter lmao. Driving back was interesting though. After practically every corner we turned there was a downed tree blocking the road. It was like a maze adventure. I saw floating/spinning trampolines, pools and pickup bedliners. I had to drive over one tree. When we got back our whole street was completely undamaged but the power was out for a few days. All in all it was an interesting experience.

I have been through the July 19, 2019, and June 11, 2017 derechos. Both of those were quite memorable. I might see one this summer!

This terminology has in essence replaced the term squall line. Which holds identical characteristics.

1:00 In some derecho videos, if you look closely you can actually see burst swaths slamming into the ground and spreading out.

Wow! 😮 😅 You lost me at the Serial Derecho. So, basically it’s like a horseshoe trough within storms with wicked winds that can bend either way? We sometimes get horizontal winds and rains from the Atlantic. It’s crazy holding an umbrella in them. Thank you for that piece of science, I’m lost! 😂❤

Derecho defined: Can't I just say "Storm"?
