Ana Maria moved to South Africa at the age of 17, leaving behind her native land of Madeira.
She entered a song contest on Springbok Radio and was awarded 2nd place from 200 entrants. The prize to record a song with the legendary songwriter and producer, Terry Dempsey. On the back of the single, the track received airplay in Rhodesia and Lourenco Marques. “Topsy” reached no.10 on the Parada Da Onda Pop.
Ana Maria began singing at the club Portuguese - União Cultural Recreativa e Desportiva Portuguesa. She sang with all her Portuguese musicians, e.g., Zito, Techa and many others.
She performed in many cities in South Africa, and Rhodesia, appealing to the wider audience including the many Portuguese living here.
She recorded five singles, “Topsy” being the first and later Terry Dempsey's "You've Got Love". Years later she appeared on Zito’s LP "Festa". She also worked with the likes of Johnny Gibson and Eddie Calvert
Her career spanned 30 years in the music business, finally spending 10 years presenting news from Madeira on the TV Portuguese channel, TVP, in South Africa.
Today Ana Maria is happily retired, still residing in South Africa.
