Apple’s App Store Monopoly - Explained!

Показать описание
Apple is getting a lot more scrutiny over its control of the App Store for iOS and iPadOS. They’re being sued by App Developers, iOS customers, and government regulators are starting to target the company with Antitrust enforcement and new laws. We’ll explore the case against Apple, the arguments Apple makes for why things should stay the way they are, and the potential impact of regulation and legislation that would open up iOS and iPadOS to third party app stores and side-loading apps directly from the Internet.

We’ll also take a look at why Apple is being investigated not just as a Monopoly, but also as a Monopsony - an obscure term relatively few people are familiar with but actually could mean a whole lot of trouble for the company, especially as it tries to explain why iOS and iPadOS’ general computing software is so different from the of MacOS, another software platform the company sells with it’s computers that doesn’t have the same App Store restrictions.

Although it's a bit off-topic considering the theme of your channel it's good to see you use your platform to spread awareness of this issue

Companies like apple make software and hardware for us the consumers to and own. Because we own the hardware and also payed to use the software, we should be able to do what we want with it. Even unsafe things. Because we own the device and also payed to use the software, why can't we do install unsafe apps if we know the risks. Good video.

Wasn't a fan of Apple and their products but after this God dang, they're more money hungry than I thought.

Apple controls the market - they mostly control the display market, most of the chips TSMC makes are for Apple, no App Store alternative, creation of their own apps for everything, like iMessage, Podcasts etc that leave no place for other developers

Great video, good job covering this.

A great example of where this behavior actively hurts consumers too is the float plane app, a video streaming platform developed by another YouTuber. They would have to raise prices for apple users if they enabled the option to pay through the iphone app because the cut apple takes is more than their entire profit margin so instead the app has to ship without a way to buy a subscription, which is necessary to use the app and then apple will not even allow them to mention how you would go about subscribing because it doesn't involve them getting a cut.

1:26 Stab in the butt for diehard Apple fans: If iPhone users, remember, these are USERS, not business people, complained to Apple that they have a monopoly over the App Store, then it REALLY is a problem.

if you don't want Apple's methods, just use an Android.

Fantastic video. I hope you produce more of these not only on this topic but other relevant topics.
Just imagine the retainer Apple pays for all those lawyers to represent them? HUGE!

This is why I don't like how Apple runs their business. Apple makes great products but it's the way they run the company.

The only way all this gets fixed is if all app developers boycott iOS. I hope that day comes eventually.

Reason why I never buy anything Apple, yep other companies are evil too. But at least I actually OWN my own devices.

Oh this could be a very interesting problem for Apple… they are gearing up to launch the vision pro and one could only assume that those apps will be on said App Store. Developers might not want to put their apps on this platform because of this issue and because it’s a new platform and this is an issue for both developers and consumers it’s gonna be a hard sell…. So this might bite apple in the butt

Thank so much for the video. Not many utuber really dare to say about Apple monopoly or any negative things about Apple, simply they dont want to be blocked by Apple to access early to Apple events or new launching products.

Apple monopoly is complexes and difficult for people from third countries, where most or not all of them dont learn or have critical knowledge about their rights as customer and their ego blindly royal to Apple since once iPhone or Apple products was a symbol, a status of social hierarchy.

But in the EU or the US, people know better when they purchase their own products. Look back at the time when Nokia was dominant market, customer have much more power to manufacturer than these present days, when u only have 2 options, get an iPhone or get an Android phone .

This duo-monopoly need to stop. We need a better competitive market such as Blackberry OS or Symbian OS or any kind of other mobile os systems than only 2 iOS or Android at present.

I think its more about security. Having control on which apps can be downloaded on their devicesinimizes risks and optimizes its usage. I think spotify for example do not have any choice but to abide otherwise, apple users will jump to Apple Music.

I like how my iPhone works. I would say apps should be allowed to redirect to web payments. But I don’t want a segmented and more unsafe experience. I know what I signed up for by buying an iPhone. If these changes occur it won’t stay the same for me. I’ll be forced to use third party stores for apps that rebel. I like knowing everything I need is in the App Store. I know the privacy policies, I know the security of them, I know I’m not downloading spyware. I’ve never been able to fully trust android.
