??? He was already lost when his rook took on d6 no? I believe his position started losing when he moved his rook to a8, giving up the b-rank for his opponent' queen and king to corner his king. But his position from the start was pretty much lost anyway his only winning factor was getting his last pawn to promotion and he tried but it lead to an early checkmate. So he did not miss it, it was simply inevitable sooner or later.

There was no move to escape the position.
To avoid check mate he would lose a rook anyway, so he knew is was over, I believe he decided to loose with a checkmate, instead of resign
