Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. Based on a true story, the film focuses on the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two-time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks, Best Actor, 1993, Philadelphia; Best Actor, 1994, Forrest Gump), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. The two men are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.

The real life Corpsman that played Chief O'Brien was absolutely superb. A real testament to the professionalism, skill, bearing and procedures of a US Military Medic. As a former military medic, superb job, sister! You made us proud!

I've never personally seen a movie where someone showed shock so well, then someone showing the other side of it, like the chief does. They work so well together in this scene.

He starts to cry....I start to cry. He digs deep in his roles without even trying and makes every character he plays look like he lived it.. He is a great actor and person....

the simple statement "Captain Phillips is safe all of your friends are dead" so powerful and soul-destroying for the hijacker.

Love how when Hanks states thank you, she states your welcome. Both times. So cordial.

These are probably the best minutes of acting in Hanks' career. You can see the horror coming up in his mind time after time, even though he tries to stay in the moment. Outstanding acting.

Best part is that this is pure acting from Tom Hanks. Corpsman Albert, who was the medic in this scene, was very star struck when shooting this scene so Tom Hanks joked around with her and told her to just relax and treat him like she would any other patient. Most other actors would just stay deeply into character but the fact he could break character and still could believably show a man breaking down from trauma once the cameras was rolling showed how amazing off an actor Tom Hanks is.

Tom Hanks is an absolute master of his craft.

The woman asking him questions did a fantastic job as well. While watching this with my husband he asked why she seemed so nonchalant. I told him she has to be that way or she can’t get her job done.
I know it’s not the same, but I suffered from compassion fatigue from getting too emotionally involved and invested in the deaths and the families of those that died at the funeral home I worked at. I had to keep my distance emotionally. It’s like reading a script eventually.

Tom Hanks is a brilliant method actor. The detachment of shock, when you float in and out of awareness was played perfectly. Very emotional.

Best scene of the movie! I cry every time. He’s in shock. And she was so professional, by the book, yet comforting & assured him that he is safe.

I KNEW when I watched this that the corpsman was real because of how she treated and assessed him. And Hanks was amazingly accurate as if he had truly experienced a horrible trauma.

Literal full-body chills. I've been getting super into drama as a genre, and scenes like this one are the main reason why. There are some phenomenal performances in drama, more so than any other genre.

So accurate, for anybody who has seen trauma

People tend to think crying is self pity. It is not. It is a release of emotion.
