NSW Premier Chris Minns has spoken out on this “confronting and sad day” after a two-year-old girl and a 40-year-old man died in an accident at Carlton train station in Sydney’s south.

A pram carrying two children fell onto the tracks around 12:25pm – the 40-year-old man then jumped onto the tracks to save the pair.

However, only one of the girls was saved and is being assessed by paramedics.

“This is a terrible, terrible tragedy,” Mr Minns said during a press conference on Sunday.

“It’s a reminder of what goes on every single day of the week with NSW Police Force members as well as members of Sydney Trains who often have to, without any warning, face a confronting scene.”

I AM AN ENGINEER...
HOW SAD IS THIS ACCIDENT...😢
I HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR YEARS ALL PRAMS & WHEELCHAIRS SHOULD HAVE THE EQUIVALENT OF "THE DEAD MANS HANDLE", AS UTILISED ON TRAINS...
THE HANDLE IS HELD KEEPING BRAKES OFF WHEN BEING USED & WHEN HANDLE IS RELEASED THE BRAKE ENGAGES!
FOR YEARS I HAVE BEEN SUGGESTING THIS...
IF THIS IDEA HAD BERN EMPLOYED THAT POOR TWO YEAR OLD GIRL & THE 40 YEAR OLD MAN WOULD STILL BE ALIVE TODAY!
I BEG THE ATHORITIES TO ENSURE THE DEAD MANS HANDLE PRINCIPAL BE EMPLOYED & BROUHGT INTO LAW ON ALL PRAMS & WHEELCHAIRS!

Let’s not beat around the bush, this is extremely tragic but one of the parents is liable, prams especially that carry 2 have brakes. Also it is common sense to have a pram parked sideways not facing the tracks. And how can a pram run away from 2 adults unless there’s negligence. Also there are automatic announcements on stations that basically says “ parents keep a hold of your prams at all times “

I don’t see the dad as heroic but he was screwed and had no choice but to do his best to make it right and try to save his girls and avoid the situation that occurred. If it is found that he was last to handle the pram and he was negligent and didn’t do what he did then he would be assisting police with their enquiries so unfortunately it was a lose, lose for him.

To the train driver, and those in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the mother and her husbands family, peace be with you.

Utterly tragic but entirely preventable.
There’s a reason prams have a strap…

Even Bangkok....same as Singapore and Malaysia and etc..have automatic gates that do not allow people to even get close to the rail lines....until the train doors open. But backward Australia doesn't understand this concept. This is a f***king disgrace!

Terrible situation.

But I’m really getting sick of politicians pretending they give a fuckabout us. 😤

They’ll use any tragic event to keep their ugly heads in the media. 😤

whats that? like 3 incidents involving trains killing someone this month alone? how do people not know safety when on a train platform at this point? all three were very avoidable if people would just use their brains! dont jump on tracks to recover dropped items, hold tight to prams (and/or have it strapped to your wrist) and apply brakes when not in use, and for god sake stay behind the yellow line. its not difficult people!

Why say girl and man like they have no relation. It was a father and his daughter.

Amazing that these trains operated for over a century without the kinds of incidents but now all of a sudden there seems to be a rise in these completely avoidable incidents, i wonder what changed. Especially in Sydney. hmmm

For those asking in the comments, the pram rolled in the wind in the few seconds the dad took his hands off the pram after getting off the lift. Dad jumped off the platform to save his two kids (twins in the stroller). Both dad and one of the girls died, the other became trapped under the train but survived.

Tragic Incident- We need platform screen doors mandatory at all stations to avoid such incidences.Gusty winds & split second you lose hand off pram & lives gone.

Spend the tax on gass safety doors like metro and china not on fireworks. How sad this didn't have to happen 😢

Why can't they raise the Edge of the Platform 1" or install a Metal Grate to stop Strollers from Rolling onto the Tracks 🤨
The Heroic Dad dived in front o a Train to save his little girls 😥

Is he a hero? If he’s the one who let go of the pram, then his negligence is the reason why one of the babies died. Horrible accident, but someone fkd up bad. Everyone knows you don’t leave children unattended at a goddam train station.

Really why do I need to hear from a politician about this death, do your job and if I need any form of counseling I'll seek some. Get out of our faces and just do what you are elected to do, and that's not to trend on social media highlights.
