We test the NetApp DS4246 24 bay Noise Levels, Wattage and PSUs. I go over IOM6 connections for NetApp to the PMC8003 controller for a direct connect and multipath setup. We will be doing a direct connect setup for our Chia Farm via the special NetApp specific QSFP cables.

I recently bought 2 x DS4246 and they work great! Compared with the USB expanders and what not I was using before, the DS4246 is just sooo much easier and, well, it just works. I got them for $230 each, which is a great price for my area (on eBay EU, people are charging around $760+shipping for them!). I also bought a DS2246 (that's the 24 bay x 2.5" version) that I'm very excited about to put to work. Can't wait to get rid of the last external USB devices.

I don't know about using both iom6 and PSU providing the lowest wattage. I think if you remove them when it's powered off it won't have a problem. Or I saw a video to that effect anyway. I saw you could reduce power by as much as 56 watts by running a single IOM6 and PSU. But maybe you had to manually control the fans. Unsure atm

Was noise mentioned? I see it in the title and I caught the bit about running two PSUs for best noise & power consumption, but didn't hear (pun intended) the actual noise output mentioned.

As I mentioned in a previous comment, I bought a 4246 and now that it's been running it is great. Additionally, I stumbled across the NetApp DS4486 and was wondering if it was a viable alternative to using two NetApp 4246's. Any thoughts on power consumptions, etc.? I am currently using SATA drives so the fact that the NetApp DS4486 is SATA only is not an issue for me.

What is the procedure to properly shutdown netapp? 1. Unmount drive and shutdown server then Can I poweroff netapp (unplug from power). ? I don't want to hurt the drive.

I haven't tried it, but I have the DS4246, and wanted to know if it's possible to hot plug it? Can I turn it back on with the server running? I've always shutdown just to be safe, but if it's possible to not do that it would save a lot of hassle. Thanks!

What kind of cable is needed to daisy chain from iom6 to iom6?

Hi, by any chance do you know if the Adaptec ASR-5445 card works with the DS4246 ? or what pci raid controller would work with it? Thx

Quick Question. I'm trying to get an Adaptec 8885 to work with this but it is not detecting the array. The array is detected by an lsi hba. I'd use the lsi but I want to make 2 disk raid arrays and the lsi card for whatever reason does not allow me to add new raid configurations after the initial setup. Thoughts?

Hi guys, forgive my ignorance as I've never had anything to do with any server hardware before, I'm here in the UK looking at buying a NetApp DS4243 NAJ-0801 24x SAS Bay 2x IOM3 Controllers + PSU STORAGE Array. Does this contain a PC etc in it or is it purely a "HDD holder" if I need to connect it to a "PC" Does it need to be anything specific other than having a SAS controller card ? Thanks guys

Nice review. Where did you get your server rack from? I'm struggling to find any used ones that are reasonably priced locally around here.

I was offered one of these for free filled with 3tb drives. I'm trying to figure out what I need to get this connected to my Windows 11 PC. I was looking at your links and it sounds like I need the HBAS installed on my OC and sas cable from my PC to the shelf.

I guess depending on the HBAS, that would manage the raid or would I use Windows Storage Spaces to manage the drives?
