You can choose it but you cannot choose what their experience will be. So all the thoughts of "it will give my kid personality" are just pure imagination. It might do that, thats possible. It could also get him teased to the point where he switches to a middle name or a nickname that's given to him and then he will never be referred to as Mortimer again in public. Your idealized scenario is not automatically the outcome. At the very least make sure the middle name is less likely to cause those issues.

Having said that, I don't really think Mortimer is a bad name at all just really uncommon.
