In order to understand dinosaurs you need to understand how fossils form; in order to understand how fossils form, you need to understand how rocks form. A brief overview of the three main pathways by which rocks are produced (cooling from a molten state; recrystallization due to heat and/or pressure; deposition and lithification of fragments of previously existing rocks), and the rock types produced by each (igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, respectively). Sedimentary rocks are examined in depth, because these are the ones in which fossils are preserved.
