A tourist’s bungee rope snapped partway through a headfirst dive off a 10-storey-high podium in southeast Thailand.

Mike, a tourist from Hong Kong, took a leap of faith at an amusement park in southeast Thailand in January - hurtling through the air with his arms outstretched.

But milliseconds before the 39-year-old reached the bottom of his jump, the cord split and he hurtled into the water several feet below.

The first commercial bungee cord jump operators were in New Zealand. They built their own bungee cords. Cords were built for specific jumper's weight range. Each cord was given a serial number. Every jump was logged and assigned to the cord's serial number. Gear was given thorough inspection at the beginning and end of every day. Before each jump, the jumper was inspected by the jump master just like a parachutist would. After a predetermined number of jumps the cord is retired.

Does anyone think the Thai bungee jump operator was as professional as the original New Zealand operators?

OMG, I bet when he hit the water it took him a min to realize what happened. He probably thought he died for a sec😳

It snapped when he was jus above the water and his velocity had virtually stopped. Hes lucky it didn't snap when he was higher up, he might not have survived the impact.

this is why I prefer bungee jumping over skydiving

I always had the impression that bungee jumping had 2 cords in case 1 snaps. Wouldn't that make sense? in the same way skydivers have 2 parachutes.

I can add this to the list of ways I know I won't die, right up there with taking a selfie with a bear at Yellowstone.

Bungee jumping is bad enough, but seriously doing it in Thailand your asking for an accident

Yeah he fell about 8 feet. Can't imagine many people not not surviving that. Scary though. Yikes!

The guy only got £300 compensation from what I heard. I would have sued them for a lot more than that!

That would have been messy had it not been over water. No way would I risk it in Thailand.

Basically came to a stop like 10 ft before the water. Could've been a hell of a lot worse!
