I've seen a lot of people commenting animal cruelty but that's very untrue. The horses are obviously treated with respect here and they take barely any blood from the horse, plus they allow it a month of recovery per extraction. Animal cruelty is harming the creature for no reason, they're not harming the horse just puncturing a vein. It's like when we take a blood test to check our condition.

this is cruel as donating a pint of your blood to the red cross... actually, horses can give even more than a gallon of blood without even getting a bit weak...

better than getting injured in some stupid horse race or getting slaughtered right away as a yearling i guess...

I don't get the hype about how this is animal cruelety? There is what I can understand 2 big factors for producing antivenom, 1. a host that won't get that ill from the venom. 2. a host that can withstand large quanteties of blood withdrawn from it without dieing. It's darn near impossible to produce some sort of bacteria/organism that can produce these antibodies since antibodies aren't coded in the DNA. They are developed when the host becomes sick from something.

To me I would say we should keep on producing it, I have had horses and love them but as for someone saying humans are selfish and abusive ...well yes we are but that is all Life not just humans every known species of either animals/insects/plants or what ever you can think of devour other animals or insects plants or as such and they all use other animals for pray and live and will always do so till life ends on this world...that is the way of the land and laws of nature, the only difference is we are a smarter mammal species so we get to choose what type of animal or what ever to use for our benefit but but that doesn't make humans more selfish or less that it just how life works so if you eat burgers eat any meats or even eat veggies either way its a  type and form or destroying another species to survive....same as if you are farming animals to later kill them and eat them...we have to in order to survive and for our specie to dominate and thrive.
