A record field of more than 75 entrants threw down the gauntlet at last weekend's Pirelli Ultimate Track Car Challenge at Virginia International Raceway.

The annual slugfest, now in its fifth year, is a hot-lap showdown thrown by Grassroots Motorsports magazine to determine who has the fastest track car in the country.

The UTCC invites a mix of professionally prepared and enthusiast-built race cars to compete against each other on VIR's fast full course for bragging rights as the "ultimate," but there's even more at stake here: The winners will be featured in the pages of Grassroots Motorsports magazine.

Although the NASA-sanctioned track event uses a simple "run whatcha brung" approach that discards the usual complicated race classes for a more straightforward shooting match, the UTCC is nevertheless a world-class competition. This year's running attracted manufacturer support from several key players, including Ford Racing, which showed off the prowess of their Boss 302S and debuted their brand-new B Spec Fiesta.

Other high-profile teams included Grand-Am champions Riley Technologies as well as pro teams from various sanctioning bodies, including the Pirelli World Challenge Sports Car Wars, NASA and the SCCA.

The cars on track were able to record some truly amazing lap times despite record high temperatures, with seven of them shattering the elusive 2-minute barrier. Once the day was done, a Riley Technologies MkXXII Track Day Car stood atop the time sheets for the second time in just three years. Tony Ave, who ran a fastest lap of 1:48.939, drove the 650-horsepower screamer.

MTI Racing driver Reese Cox took a solid second overall with a 1:54.958 in a production-based Chevy Corvette Z06. Other fast competitors included Steve Bassen, who recorded a staggering 1:59.871 in a modified BMW E30-chassis M3; Danny Popp, who muscled a surprisingly stock 2006 Chevrolet Corvette to a 1:56.976; Jason Bowles, who ripped off a 1:55.372 in a Ganassi Racing COT Mustang; and Tony Wiesenhahn, who flew to a remarkable 2:01.309 in a four-cylinder Subaru Impreza WRX STI.
