You know your law is ridiculous when this kind of thing happens and the farm owners are the ones called "criminals".

A few years ago a friend inherited a property in Quebec that has a maple bush on it. The federation tried to sue him for the value of maple syrup that could have been produced if he had produced any. It cost him a great deal to defended himself in court against those parasites.

Imagine sitting in prison and getting asked "What are you in for?"

As a maple syrup burglar

This is what happens when you allow a limited liability corporation to make law...which should never be allowed.

Only 1/2 the thieves were caught. The ones charging 12% were bigger thieves than the ones stealing the syrup and should be in jail too. People shouldn't be forced against their will to join any organization and that's exactly what happened here.

A maple syrup heist, a cartel, and non-violent illegal dealings? Doesn't get more Canadian than this. Only in Canada can you go to jail for smuggling/producing syrup.

The most "canadian" crime ever

Stealing from thieves isn't actually stealing. It's a good way to explain yourself. Wether they believe you or not is up to how good you are at explaining

Fair trade requires fair competition. The farmers have the right to sell to whomever, wherever and whenever they want. The trade association should be deemed unconstitutional or whatever the equivalent is in Canada. It's a private organization and therefore should not have the ability to enforce their rules on anyone not wanting to be in the association.

I love this guy because his thumbnail isn’t clickbait, it’s legit content

Laws protect corporations, not people. My family is from New Brunswick . They run Chicken factories and Steel mills up there. It's not just the maple farmers that get exploited.

As a Canadian I resent this cartel. I can’t afford to buy maple syrup anymore and could use a break in the price now and then soI could get a bottle.

It takes roughly 32 litres of maple sap to make 1 litre of maple syrup. When I was younger, I did some tapping and spent an entire day boiling sap to end up with about 2 cups of syrup. The steam pealed all the wall paper off the kitchen walls. I never made syrup again.

This is really sad to hear. Happens everywhere though - different produce, same story. In the end, it's always the farmers that take the massive loss.

What a sticky situation. I feel for the maple rebels.

Now I have more reason to buy New Hampshire made maple syrup from local farms. Greed is universal.

I completely understand anti-federation sentiments, it’s entirely stupid that you cannot sell maple syrup in Canada without some 3rd party regulating all your moves and taking your money. Why should you have to pay a tax for a non-government service? Why should they have to abide by their rules? A man can’t just sell the fruits of his labor anymore?

I love how the most illegal thing Canadians can think of is selling syrup without a license
