My Dad was in the army and I've spent my life living on base to base. (Or cantonment to cantonment as we call it.) Since you asked why people join the army, here's my answer.
There are basically 4 types of people who join the army-

1. Those who join for the pay and the perks, and to learn a trade or skill. (These are the majority, and they are largely from far far flung villages most people have never heard and they live in poverty.)

2. The hardcore patriots who want to do something for their country (This is the 2nd largest group.)

3. The ones who come from a military background and would love to serve as part of a family tradition.

4. The ones who are a little off in their head. They're smart, highly motivated, but they definitely have some screws a little loose up there.
They're sort of the square pegs of the world. (And these are the guys who end up usually joining the Para Special Forces and the Ghataks.)

PS-
When I got to ask a Para SF guy, why did he join, especially when his dad was super loaded, he said this, "Because I get to shoot someone's head off and it isnt murder. Civilization bores me with its bright lights, malls and McDonalds. I'd rather be on a night patrol slipping into enemy territory and doing what I do best- killing the enemy."
That's the crazy I'm talking about.

Pay in Indian military is decent. Not too much, not less. But government got them covered with health care, education allowances, decent pension but the sweet thing is Indians are nationalist so no matter what the payment is they'll go fight, man and woman.

Speaking from experience (MY DAD WAS IN THE NAVY FOR 30 YEARS AND RETIRED JUST THIS JANUARY).
EVERYTHING IS HEAVILY SUBSIDISED NOT EXACTLY FREE EXCEPT FOR HEALTH CARE WHICH IS COMPLETELY FREE FOR THE FAMILY TOO.
THE PAY IN INDIAN NAVY IS QUITE GOOD. A SAILOR CAN EARN UPTO 70000-85000 RUPEES MAX (A LITTLE EXTRA IF YOU ARE A SUBMARINER OR ARE A COMMANDO)
THE OFFICERS PAY IS MUCH MUCH HIGHER. STARTING FROM 60000-70000 GOING UPTO 275000 MAX(VERY HIGH RANKING OFFICER).
THGE BEST THING THOUGH IS THE FACT THAT YOU MOVE ARROUND SO MUCH. EVERY MAJOR COASTAL CITY IN INDIA.
DAD GOT POSTED TO RUSSIA AND JAPAN TOO FOR A YEAR EACH AND WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO EXPERIENCE THOSE PLACES TOO.

I'm an Ex-NDA(National Defence Academy) cadet. What we learned there is your pay doesn't matter, because when you ready to shed blood then nothing is expensive. And talking about pay, it depends between non-officers and officers. But it offers an expensive lifestyle

My dad serves the Indian army and if I know one thing, that is "THE INDIAN ARMY TAKES CARE OF YOUR FAMILY WITH AND WITHOUT YOU". The facilities you get as a family member of an army personel, no.matter the rank is something no institution in this world can offer!

The pay's good but it's the allowances that just makes your life so much simpler in the Indian army. You have less things to worry after you've joined Indian army.

The pay is awesome... Good Life.... Prestigious Career... In India, when a Politician or Actor dies no one cares but When A Soldier martyr's the Whole country mourns... This is India's Sentiment for The Army... During Childhood every Indian try to become cricketer, When they grow up everyone dreams to join the Army... So those who get selected are the best among the best... With such a huge population and competition only a few get through the selection procedure... i myself is an aspirant... Giving UPSC exams for last 2years and still dreaming to join the Armed Forces... Worlds Best Profession

🙏 3:20 The Siachen Glaciers, known as the world's highest battlefield, are located in the eastern Karakoram mountain range in the Himalayas, huddled next to the borders of Pakistan, India, and China.
The region includes the world's second-longest glaciers, stretching an impressive 76 kilometers (47 miles).

The Indian Military Services make sure that your life as an officer is quite phenomenal. You get access to the best medical care for you and your family, colonial-style houses with massive gardens in well-furnished cantonments. Your children have access to premier educational institutions across the country. You receive a pay which puts you in the upper-middle-class- upper class in the economic strata of society. I cannot even mention the other hidden benefits like subsidies, reserved seats in universities, phenomenal job opportunities and a great pension after pay. With the hard work that each member of our armed forces puts in, I still think they deserve more. Jai Hind!!

Massive respect to this Ex-Marine for being educated about the Para SF and Ind. military in general. Regardless to say there tonns of ignorants on the internet that are just not informed about them and make crass statements that are just logical fallacies. In fact there was another marine on youtube not knowing anything about the PARAs and was simply bigoted.
Indian SFs are among the best on the planet and even have proved that in International inter-military competitions as well.
