Russia. Leningrad region. The daily life of the wards of the social village "Svetlana". The village, where 20 people with mental disabilities and several specialists live, was created as an alternative to closed social institutions in the early 1990s on the banks of the Syas River (150 km east of St. Petersburg). There are four houses in the village, a small farm, a vegetable garden, greenhouses and a bathhouse. Residents came here from Moscow, Sevastopol, Kazan, St. Petersburg.

Деревня, в которой живут 20 человек с ментальной инвалидностью и несколько специалистов, была создана в качестве альтернативы закрытым социальным учреждениям в начале 1990-х на берегу реки Сясь (150 км к востоку от Санкт-Петербурга). В деревне четыре дома, небольшая ферма, огород, теплицы и баня. Жители приехали сюда из Москвы, Севастополя, Казани, Петербурга.

It is common that after leaving school and before entering a university German students do something different for a year, instead of just studying for the required Abitur exam. I've been here for almost two years now. At first, I came for a year to work as a volunteer. I grew to like it, not only my work but this way of life and the nature here. When I went back to Germany, I missed this community so much. There I realised that I wouldn't be happy and came back to work here again."
