Thank you for saying this. Growing up Asian, I feel like we are told our job is our life, and there is no identity separation. I’m only starting the journey to find my self worth outside of work, and really appreciate your message in this video.

YES!!! I've been saying this for so long and I'm only 18. A while ago I saw a video talking about the job that your heart wants vs the job that your brain wants, and here's my example:

I've always been very passionate about art, but realistically I knew that would be far too hard for me to make a career out of, and I'd loose passion for it as soon as it became a mandatory thing instead of an inspired thing. I call this the job that my heart wants, and I'll maintain it as a hobby until I'm grounded enough in my career to explore others on the side without risk.
On the flip side for the brain-job, I combined the same creativity and design aspects from art with my liking to math and logic, and concluded on going into engineering. I've been pursuing this field for roughly 5 years now, and I'm currently majoring in aerospace engineering. I can comfortably say that this is the career for me, as it alligns my interest and passions but I can still separate it as buisness. I'm still able to unwind after an exam with my sketchbook.

What I recommend doing is finding what you're good at and building off of that. As long as you don't hate it, work with it and explore your options. Don't make things harder than they should be, and try not to get overwhelmed.
Also, it's okay to change your passions. You don't have to have it all figured out at 17. You're doing great and I believe in you <3 everyone is smart at something.

I fully agree! A job should never take up everything in anyone’s life and it shouldn’t be anyone’s whole identity…just like who your family is, your friends and who you might end up dating, if dating anyone, or your religion is never your whole identity and you are your own person with your own mind, strengths, weaknesses and interests. Thank you for this wisdom!

Glad you realize this. For a long time I was convinced that being a PM was your whole personality. There’s more to life and these jobs will dump you the moment it’s convenient for them.

Honestly I have my dream job. There’s things I don’t like and it can be stressful but it is greatly outweighed by the fact that I feel like I’m making a difference everyday. I agree with her tho don’t get me wrong

What about a job that doesn’t have a negative impact on people and the planet? Looks like you didn’t take that into account in your past jobs

What if you just don't have money so you need to work hard, in order to have at least a chance of a successful life? Talking like that is fine and all if you are privileged. Mid tier companies don't want to hire me, let alone companies like Google/TikTok etc 😢 I would die for them to hire me because my resume would be boosted and maybe I wouldn't have a crippling anxiety about money anymore

this is the worst advice ever! i didn’t want to work, because you work most of your life and you never get to enjoy it if you don’t like ur job. so i worked for a company that i loved, had everything i wanted, and it feels like i never have to work. i am always happy to go work because it doesn’t feel like a job. it’s basically a hobbie that i get paid for! people that say, work needs to be the opposite of your hobbie so that you can separate the two, are the dumbest. they need to wake up and see how much better life is when you don’t work a day in ur life
