I'm a residential designer and I'm fixing architects mistakes. I've met with many customers who has had problems with architects.

This video is a great example of the most common misconception in residential architecture. "Residential Designers" can, and often times do, offer very comprehensive design and construction administration services. The difference between an Architect and a "Residential Designer" (Drafter) is simply the education and experience required to practice. I know many residential designers (drafters) that were once skilled carpenters, and more often than not, they're much better equipped than even the most experienced architects when it comes to design and construction advise. To say residential designers (drafters) are only useful for small projects is not only an injustice to builders turned drafters, but so you're aware, this video is borderline business defamation. That's as bad as telling clients, Architects that design residential projects just weren't good at commercial work, so now they're competing with drafters instead of other architects. It's a bold faced lie. THERE ARE TERRIBLE ARCHITECTS, AND THERE ARE TERRIBLE DESIGNERS. Hope anyone who watches this video also sees this comment. The video is misleading to the benefit of architects who don't want you to know about the more affordable, abundantly available, and equally comprehensive alternative. Truthfully misleading.

A designer is in fact a designer. They design based on their knowledge, expertise and drafting skill. They are not o be mistaken with 'drafters'. There are good designers and there are a bad designers. Finding a good designer is not always an easy task! Now lets talk about the architects. In real world, there are architects who are designers and there are architects who are drafters. Some are indeed both. People got to understand when a client looking for a residential designer, they are specifically looking for a person who can design a house. But when the same client blindly looks for an architect, there is always a chance he may end up with someone who may be a board certified architect and not have designed a single house in his or her entire professional life other than drafting for the boss where he or she works. In that case a Client needs to decide which way to go - A residential designer or with someone who merely holds the certification of calling an ARCHITECT. The best answer is: Look for a person who can design and has the proven record and the portfolio to show his or her achievements.
