Now the hard part getting the backing plate off the bearing

You’re supposed to put some kind of jack stand under the control arm before you hit it. Other wise the suspension will absorb most of the force from you strike. Also where is your purse

I like that longer leverage design better and i have a hub buster.

Add a large eye bolt at the end, weld it on, and connect a cherry picker or come along to that end and let the machine do all the hard work next time. I've had to do this on my Ford trucks and I can tell you that they were much much more difficult to get off, and that's what I did to get them off. When you get up high enough with the winch the truck's weight becomes your leverage so you don't have to swing a heavy hammer. This works great for people with bad shoulders.

I used the Hub Shocker. It separated the hub from the bearing housing. Will be returning it. I put the hub back on and weld the two pieces together. Will enlarge one of my stud holes to 3/4 inch and use a 5/8 hardened bolt to remove it. The hub shocker places downward force when the force needs to move directly away from the hub.

They have one on the matco truck just like that. But want to know what’s easier? I take an air hammer and go at the bolts from the back pushing the bearing/hub out. Way easier and faster than that. I’ve worked on Subarus for about 15 years and have my own shop and lot now.

let's see you do that in the rust belt 😂

I loosen the hub bolts a couple turns then give them a shot to the head. The hub comes out very easily

Here’s a couple tips: 1. Get a set of PASS Through lug nuts that fit your rig - specifically (M12 x 1.25 for 2017 Forester). The nuts that are provided with these tools are cheap and might not fit your rig. 2. If possible, put the car on jack stands and use a floor jack to support the suspension. It gives blunt force a bit more impact.

Also, get a can of penetrating oil spray. I’m no expert but, PB Blaster penetrating oil spray has been good. As soon as you see any bit of movement of the hub & bearing…spray some penetrating fluid and give it 10 minutes…or more…to soak in. It really does help.

A 5 pound sledge works best from about 2 feet, don’t “swing for the fences, ” you’re not putting a fast ball over the green monster. Be patient, it will release. When it does, use the penetrating oil again, let it soak in for a while, then knock the bearing out of the backing plate (comes out best when you use a 3 pound drill hammer).

I’ve replaced both rear wheel bearings on our well cared for 2017 Forester; if it wasn’t for the tool in this video, I would NEVER have gotten those bearings to release. Also, one side is OEM Subaru and the other is a Timkin bearing and hub assembly. I prefer the Timkin, 1/3 the price and I’ve had nothing but good experiences with their bearings over the years. Good luck 👍😎

Ps We live in Oregon, we get rain, not much salt on the roads where we live. Don’t think that just because you live somewhere dry you wouldn’t need this tool; chances are…you will!

I'm considering the same resort with my 18 forester. Really getting tired of this shit happening on subarus; I've never had issues with seized parts with any other vehicle but subaru.

I made one of these just for my subaru rear hub replacement

Why you want to remove something that fit horizontally, punching at 90 degrees? You should punch in the direction it was put in
When you put the new hub, do you punch it in in that way?

We're 4 hours in on a 17 legacy. This is actually hell

looks very likely to damage something or crack the piece holding the bearing. too much

Remove all but 1 bolt then drive car back and forth, this will break the hub loose.
