In this video, KTVA Student Nohely Cisneros does a takedown of a great Steve Perry song, Separate Ways by Journey.
Journey - Separate Ways - Cover - Nohely Cisneros - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Separate Ways by Journey was one of the first times the band started to do heavier music.
I remember seeing an article by Steve Perry saying that the band wanted to go heavier and that singing this type of music for him night after night was costing him his voice.
It can be difficult to get a singer like Steve Perry, with a Sam Cook sound, and encourage them to sing heavier stuff without a strong understanding of how much diaphragmatic support is involved, and what the pacing of the voice and correct vowel placement are when singing heavy.
My new student Nohely and I decided to take on this epic classic piece and make it even heavier!
I know Daughtry and Lzzy Hale recently covered this, and they made it heavier as well, and I think they did an awesome job! (It's funny, their video of Separate Ways has a very similar look to many of my KTVA students videos.)
With that said, we submit to you Separate Ways!
Let us know how she did :-)
