We like like to use a landing net after we noodle the catfish to make it more gentle on the catfish. We just do catch and release so we try to do as little harm as possible when we noodle; so we just grab them by their lower lip and not their gills. And then once we get them out of the hole putting them in a landing net is a great way to cause as little stress as possible to the flathead or blue catfish.
You can definitely noodle catfish without gloves and it won't do any real harm to you. You'll get your hands torn up and basically get hundreds of paper cuts which is definitely not fun in the days following. So, I'd recommend wearing gloves when noodling big flathead catfish otherwise your hands will definitely sting for a day or two.
You can get inexpensive gardening gloves or more expensive ones that are more durable.
I definitely recommend buying a good pair of goggles. It makes a huge difference when your goggles fit good, don't let water in & don't fog up. I like the big mask goggles because it increases your field of view but it's really personal preference.
Get yourself a gropro to document your catfish noodling adventures! I love sharing the videos with family and friends!
