I love all your videos. So pleased I have found you guys. On the topic- giving space to those people is essential. Off the topic- may I ask what Ryan has behind on the door? :)

Great episode. It has taught me about rethinking how I approach pointing out an observation, in the way the team are managing it processes, and coupling it with questions.

Thanks Ryan and Todd for wonderful video.
Believe me I tried the steps mentioned by Todd but when this behavior is not limited to 1 person but 20-30 % of your team and start creating Anti-Patterns in Scrum Ceremonies like Sprint Planning or Sprint Retrospective then it becomes really difficult for a Scrum Master to find different ways to improve upon individuals.

I am facing this issue in Sprint Planning where only 2 -3 Team members (out of 30) speaks out in giving Story point estimations or asking more questions or even challenging the Story points given by 1 person. It is usually same 2-3 person who are well experienced with the product, more extrovert hijacking the complete Sprint Planning. Its just other team members keep following them what they say.

I have even spoken to them and asked to give some space then it took negative impact where it was complete silence or even wrong misinterpretation of the PBIs.

Please suggest different ways to help in such scenario when it is Sprint Planning or Retrospective.

Thanks in advance.

Not an easy answer, lots of different reasons, give them space, be vulnerable, spend some time getting to know team members, be authentic, be inclusive, be non-judgemental, be human, create safety, give them time, show that you care for their well-being, learn over time what they need, and respond with an empathetic mindful manner always. Thanks RR+TM 🌟

365 Days with you guys, sheesh made me realize that I am committed to you both more than to my family :D :D :D #WorthIt

I try giving the silent person the space and a question to ponder. I plant a question within the team too. And mostly, the silent person comes back to me after two three days or even during Daily Scrum and elaborates their ideas or thoughts. I find that space and time without any judgement helps people to come out of their shell and share their thoughts and let them catch up with team spirit and flow.

Interesting. In cases like that, I like the idea to explain the 05 values and demonstrate how important is for that person to join the table and be part of the fun. If he\she is still far, try some 1-1 approach and give some space for he\she to talk.

Are we talking about the engineers/developers here? Because I doubt the SM or PO would be quiet

Excellent as always, scrumming better every day. Question: do you guys think teams may benefit of rotating scrum masters every certain period of time? To give a breath of freshness into the team and maybe tighten some things which may have gotten too relaxed over time
