I completely understand your pain.
My first couple of weeks living in South America I once Offered To wash the dishes after dinner at a friend's house. Unfortunately Mexican Spanish for dishes is not the same word for Chilean Spanish. Instead of saying may I wash the dishes for you, I actually said may I wash your butts for you.
