The health benefits of Lemon Balm are many. Personally, I can't have enough of it in my garden. Yes, I grow it in containers and freeze or dry it for winter uses.

I have had many encounters with the benefits of lemon balm. The first time that I saw its miraculous results was about 15 years ago when my daughter was feeling really sick after eating ham that wasn't totally fresh and she was on her way to the hospital. I went to meet her and on my way I purchased a small bottle of water and a Melissa tea pouch at a cafe. I placed the pouch inside the water and brought it to my daughter... about fifteen minutes later when I arrived my daughter was pale and yellowish feeling the digestive discomfort typical of food poisoning, she started drinking the cold tea from the bottle and once she was finished she was feeling 100% better. Before my intervention she was headed for the hospital where she would have been left to wait until a doctor would attend to her and probably bombard her with all kinds of medication. I have used and abused of lemon balm since then as it grows in my property. Last night after having eaten way too many Star cookies which immediately made my stomach feel bloated, I went to bed feeling quite uncomfortable and soon after I had to get up feeling quite miserable which led me to the bathroom with chills. I picked some fresh Melissa threw it into a large cup of boiled water and started drinking it after letting it steep for 5 minutes. After half a cup of tea my total discomfort started to fade and several sips later I was back to my normal self! This is absolutely true, I recommend this plant to everyone. I usually chop up a few bits of the plant which I add to my salads! It's a godsend!

Okay, so here is the deal with any plants in the mint family... Aside from planting them in containers and keeping them in a contained environments that way, one can also plant them in the ground. Don't be afraid. But they have to be planted in the right spot. For me, that is in circles planted around the center regions of the yard. So they can be easily controlled by pruning, harvesting, and mowing around the circles. Anything that grows beyond your artificial edge, can be mowed and you will have a yard that smells AMAZING. Call them weeds if you must, but certain varieties planted in the right spot accessible to a mower and Walla, you have a yard that smells like no one else's. Not only that, but it seems the more research we do, the more likely we are to find that most of the healthiest foods on earth are "weeds."

Hi Angela, I have a question. Since you don't let the plant go to seed for self sowing, will the plant grow back purely from the root system from the year before?

Hey, I started a few raised beds and I’ve planted mint and spearmint aswell as lemon balm in my garden, after some research I found out how quickly mint spreads so I moved it into a separate container but I left the lemon balm, so do I just cut it to the bottom when I see the white flowers? also you have some gorgeous leaves on yours 💖💖

Wow.. People hate lemon balm...
They remind me of people that tear up trees and lay down rock..Or praying chemicals that could harm much more than the target ptoblem. It seems that when I need a little job here and there I would get stuck doing something like that which I consider sacrareligeous..
