A "standing only" escalator experiment at Holborn Tube station got off to a rocky start today as hundreds of Londoners ignored advice and walked anyway.

Commuters are being asked to stand on both the left and right hand sides of the long escalators at one of the busiest stations on London Underground network as part of a six month trial.

Tests have shown the move reduces congestion by 30 per cent. A third upwards escalator is available for people who wish to walk up the steps.

TfL has implemented a range of measures, including footprints on the escalator steps, in an effort to educate passengers.

If there are multiple escalators, I'm fine with having some which are standing only, but there should still be at least 1 escalator where you can walk

Hahaha, I'm sure people who had somewhere to be loved being told this. He'd have to grab me and hold me as I ride up if he wants to keep me from walking.

That's going to be way better for people who don't live in London and fear walking up the escalators

So you move faster when you stand on an escalator than walk on it? What a joke.
