Fun-to-drive saloons are BMW’s bread and butter, but now the premium German brand has added electric power to its hugely popular company-car formula to create this: the i4. The zero-emissions four-door is quite possibly BMW’s most important EV to date, and not just because it goes toe-to-toe with the Tesla Model 3. The i4 is also our first chance to see if BMW can make a pure-electric driver’s car. Editor Richard Ingram went to find out…

I remember when iDrive came out 20 years ago and people whinged about how 'difficult' it is to use. This iDrive 8 is just fine to use.

Wish you had discussed its Auto Cruise. I test drove an IX a few days ago here in the USA. Well, list price was $92, 000. There was NO radar control of the cruise at all...it showed no sign of slowing down as we approached the car in front. The salesman had no idea if that feature was included. Duh.

I bought an i4 m40 from Turkey, it's been 15 days and they haven't delivered.
Are you aware of such an update? They said we are waiting for an update from Germany, do you have a chance to learn it?

Nice review! I'm considering one of these now that Mercedes has released the UK price of the EQE. Personally, I think a specced up base model over the M50 is the way to go

I don’t understand a little, does BMW have some kind of sound similar to the sound of an engine?

Do you know when they’ll be available in BC, Canada for purchase? I only see reservations

Whilst £50+ grand is not exactly cheap, it's good that the 'entry-level' car is the recommendation, rather than the ballistic dual-motor M50.
Whether you think it's a 'lazy, piston-conversion option' or not, it'll sell by the bucket-load... 😎

The 40 i4, for me, is the pick of the range! No need splurge out on M50, unless you’re really flush with cash.

Communication is possibly a little lacking when it comes to steering. The range is excellent, and the exterior is stunning. This is a BWW classic that is pure electric.

Can someone tell me how much range must be compromised to have proper door handles?

I've been really hard on BMW for years now on dropping the ball with BEVs. Its great to see them finally taking it seriously. I also hope this forces Tesla to up its game and improve the areas of the Model 3 that are lacking and are shown up by the i4 and Polestar. Now if only BMW could do something about the hideous

Nice review. M50 for AWD if you want better handling in wet or snow conditions.

When are they going to make a sub £10k car? The whole point of EVs is they are far cheaper to make.

4.43, hard to believe for a car so heavy.

It looks like a BMW, it feels like a BMW, it drives like a BMW and it’s a cracking car, but………it is not a family saloon and it should’ve been built as a 2 door. Unless you are 3ft6, you can’t get in the rear seats with the drivers seat in the ideal driving position for anyone over 5ft10. No way could you take your mates to the game/pub/restaurant. It beats the LR3 in every aspect except for practicality and for a 50k 4door saloon, it needs to be practical

Funny how reviewer's objectiveness is questioned when they praise anything but a Tesla

I thought the new i3 would be a China-only model.
