The French-Algerian philosopher, pretty-boy and goalkeeper Albert Camus concludes his essay "The Myth of Sisyphus" with the now iconic line: “One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”

Ah yes, Sisyphus is happy…hmm…"

But wait. Why and how is Sisyphus happy? Can we flip the script on our existentialism?

Why are you still reading this? Watch the video and find out.

I read the essay at beginning of this year and for the longest time could not really think why must one Sisyphus happy? And then I tried to put myself in his shoes. Let's say I am condemned to push a rock to the top of a mountain everyday. What will I do? And the first thing that occurred to me was that, I won't. I won't push the boulder on to the top of the mountain just for it to roll back down. Why put effort into something that is so futile, so 'absurd'? But then I kept thinking, what will I do instead? Won't all my days become just the same? Sitting and looking. Thinking but nothing else. The boulder suddenly appears attractive. It has the power to make a difference in all that is mundane. I can push the boulder once and then say rest for the next week. But you see, the boulder is at the core of it. It is because of the boulder that my rest has any meaning. I am not exactly sure if this is what Camus meant but I can see his point of view around why 'One must imagine Sisyphus happy'.
Also, a great fan of your work, Yepi !!

I gather you're a malayali so bringing to notice a very similar myth that's present in the valluvanad region about Naranathu Bhranthan. This interpretation of the Sisyphus struggle is much more apparent in Branthan's case as he is described as explicitly enjoying doing this apparently futile activity.

I don't know where the myth originated from. Could be borrowed directly from the Greeks during the days when trade was happening between Keralam and Europe, or it could be from a common proto indo european myth that parted ways. Either way it's amazing how both versions can converge to have the same interpretation.

Great content as always. Cheers!
