Massive ebay COB LED Grow light test

I bought a '12V 70W 7,000LM LED Panel Strip COB Light Lamp' from Ebay and tested to see if it suitable as a grow light. It's well made. The aluminium board is thick and solid and all 336 of the LED's are well matched so it is likely to be reliable to run at the correct load.

The data sheet says 12V DC and 70 watts but at 12V it draws over 4 Amps and runs very hot. At 11.5V DC and 2.5 Amps it runs pretty cool. We tested it at this wattage (33.5 watts including the LED driver). The light outputs 44 PPFD at 9 cm from the canopy over 2ft x 2ft or 60cm x 60cm. The PPFD per watt is 1.42.

You would need at least 4 to cover a 60cm x 60cm grow space.

Thats €40 for 4 + €10 postage = €50
The driver, wiring, plugs etc = €50

Total €100 for a 100W, 1.4 PPFD per Watt light. Not really worth it, better to buy a MARs reflector or equivalent.

However if you have a 12V power supply current limited to 2.5 Amps this will work perfectly. Thats what I am going to do with it and use it as a seedling lamp.

Hi, this giant leds are powerful I tested under water to about 125W OK. But you can easy go to 100W with air heatsink & fan for massive light. voltage needs to go around 14-14, 6V around 7A but keep current limited and good air circulation. For long use go to 70-80W power.

MIGRO, what app (1:16) when looking for Android that you have?
Is lux in the 5000K ranges?

Shane you know how they say Hps should be 12-24 inch away from canopy, some led's 36 inch away and Cmh around 20 inch's, how close to the canopy could I get these if i wanted to do a vertically stacked grow?

Like a 1 sq metre grow with another 1 sq meter grow stacked on top of it (doubling floor space). Led's seem like the way to go for heat in this setup, but I only have 2.2 metre in height, so its the is the light to canopy distance that is the problem (taking up precious height space that i don't want to give up).

A bunch of these would give me a meter sq of coverage (I would cool them) BUT how close can I get them to the canopy and still get top notch 'Indoor Tomatoes'?

Also would the penetration to the lower 'Tomato Bud's' be Ok? Lets say in 12 inch's of foliage from top of canopy to where it was 'lolly-popped'?

these would be good for a solar setup..in winter you could draw enough energy to light them..? in a greenhouse possibly?

Saw this one on Big Clive.com. The size of it is hilarious. Always wondered if they are any good for growing. Thanks for the info :D

I bought 7 of these...3 cool 4 warm. One of my panels has some dim lines across it at low voltage but can't see it when at 12 Volts

Thank you for this information! Ever since I've seen this style of cob on big Clive's channel I wandered how well these cheap large ones perform compared to better quality cobs

Chuck a heat sink on the back. Crank it up and see what it can do before it pops!!

i have been using 3 of these lights in my living room hooked up to a battery pack from my solar panels they are very bright and have been burning without any heat sinks on them for over 3 years now lighting my living room every night with not one pixel out yet. i used 4 in a home made grow using 12v 5amp power to each and they worked great, actually worked better than a mars hydro 1000, better spectrum for flowering in the 3500 range. I would even dangle on on the sides for side lighting hanging from the wire it was attached to. cant let the lights touch the walls they will overheat and blow. they are a cheap solution to a home made grow light that will work as good if not better than the expensive ones because its the right spectrum for flowering. they do get hot enough that you will pull your hand away because it burns if you touch the back. but it has not affected their operation for the past 3 years now. I have been testing them to see how many years they will light for and we are over 3 now almost 4 years..

I am running 7 off a 20Amp PWM motor controller, at 13.8V with about 50% duty cycle. They are warm, not hot. Working well. I had the power supply already so only in it for the cost of the panels and the rig to hold it which I made from PVC conduit and fittings.

I've been experimenting with 2 of these and found they were fine at 3 amps as long as there was enough heatsink on them. I tried them on a bigger supply but I couldn't see any difference to the output and they seem fine as they are.

Hey Shane, when will you be updating your soil vs hydro series? I'm really interested to see the progress.

I don’t understand why they keep making these massive claims about the consumption of these LEDs were always to the BS thanks to people like yourself so why do they continue to do it they must watch these films just like the rest of us absolutely bonkers and thanks again mate keep up the good work I’ve just ordered your 600 W kit can’t wait to see how it performs

What about Epistar 50W (Red and Blue or Full Specteum) chip? How good or bad is this chip?

Would love to own a migro light but way out my grow budget 😭 great video very informative 👍

Goinjg ahead, please properly heatsink them, even just an aluminim slab, so you cant est the proper wattage.
