Whats funny about this story is that you don’t have to beat the magister with magic, which means a strong enough barbarian could beat the magister, and become the new head magic authority in the world

Old Gnawbones, the Ancient Green Dragon of whom the town of Silverymoon countered her scrying by creating an illussionary court drama for her to watch to both mislead her and keep her entertained.

I love me mystra lore. Especially her birth myth, which also coincides when the rules of magic changed dramatically and the only 12th level spell ever cast :D

I do find it funny that Mystra's answer to keeping the "who is the most magical mage" contest fair. Is to give them innate magic resistance for a while.
That while 2 out of 5 different mages got struck down by unspecified/an axe.

Funny you should mention a rock becoming the new magister - in my campaign world, the way to become the God of Assassins is to kill the previous God of Assassins. One time the guy was killed in a landslide, and a pile of rocks technically became the new God of Assassins. Then a wandering barbarian cleared the road and he became the new GoA.

You know, there's always something cathartic about a supremely powerful wizard dying to something as mundane as getting hit in the head with something sufficiently hard/sharp.

Small point of clarification. There were two (or three if you count Mystryl) different Mystras. Original Mystra was Lawful Neutral, and ascended to her position after Mystryl, the previous goddess of magic, died in that incident that also led to Mystra's Ban as you mentioned.

The second Mystra was a mage named Midnight who ascended during the Time of Troubles to replace her predecessor, after the previoous Mystra was slain by Helm for trying to disobey the rules of that whole shitshow by returning to her divine domain. This new Mystra was Neutral Good, not Lawful Neutral. Though considering how dirty she did my man Gale, I would just call her True Neutral.

My question is what would of happened if Turnock had died to to the spell tattoo. His killer was already dead. would there be no Magister? would a random one be pick? would the guy who next put on the pope hat get it? Would the magic explode with no person to go to? Things to wonder, or story beats to write for a campaign?

The is whole story could be summed up as

“Local goddess changes the rules of her religion after “Wizard Shenanigans” leave 13 Magic Popes dead.”

And that will never stop being funny to me.

Dwayne the Rock Johnson is actually the rock that the Magistrate tripped over, Mystra awarded a rock sentience for killing the past Magistrate
