Dr. Lera provides another update regarding coronavirus (COVID-19) in pets, and suggests a few tips that could help you & your pets to stay safe. It is now a fact that a significant portion of the world's population will eventually contract this virus, so we've reached a point where we have to prepare.

Infectious disease experts and multiple international and domestic human and animal health organizations (CDC, OIE, WHO) agree there is no evidence at this point to indicate that pets can spread COVID-19 to other animals, including people.

Although there have not been reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19, out of an abundance of caution, it is recommended that those ill with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus.

Dr., can turkeys and pigs catch this virus? If they can, what would happen if someone ate them. Would covid then be transmitted to humans.

So far, there is no evidence of your pet contracting the Coronavirus from you. And vice-versa. However, things like a leash, collar, or pet carrier is still considered a fomite. So, as stated above, always wash your hands properly before and after any interaction with your pets (always a good idea anyway)!
