The house of David did not end there. Jehoiachin (another prince of judah, besides jehoiakim), had sons while in captivity in babylon. And through his sons the royal line of judah continued all the way to Christ, the son of david. And in that scripture was fulfilled that david should never want for a man to sit on his throne forever.

King David probably lived around 1000 BC, it's commonly accepted that the book of Deuteronomy was composed in the court of King Josiah of Judah, sometime around 620 BC, as part of propaganda campaign aimed to strengthen Josiah's authority. Leviticus was compiled at an even later date, no earlier than 500 BC. The ancient Jews had no synagogues, yeshiva, rabbis - or even a Bible.
During the Second Temple Jewish scholars were formed due to Persian and Greek influence. They wrote and interpreted texts. They came to be known as Rabbis and the texts they compiled were christened " The Bible ". The Great Jewish Revolt ( AD 70 ) was suppressed and Romans destroyed Jerusalem and it's temple.
