New AstraZeneca age recommendation only a 'minor change'

President of the Australian Medical Association, Dr Omar Khorshid, says he is “confident” the new recommendation for AstraZeneca will not be a major issue for the vaccine rollout.

He said while the age 60 and over recommendation is a “little bit of a blow” for the program, it is still possible for every Australian to be fully vaccinated by the end of the year.

“We do have quite good access to the AstraZeneca vaccine, and limited supply of Pfizer still coming into the country every week,” Dr Khorshid told Sky News.

“The Pfizer vaccine has the two doses nice and close together, as long as we get the Pfizer that’s expected at the end of this year, we’ll still get the job done.”

Numerous nations who rolled out the AstraZeneca vaccine before Australia made this decision over one month ago. Some nations have totally banned the AstraZeneca vaccine. Why have our health authorities decided to ignore the overseas experiences and only taken appropriate action once we reached the same stages of concern as those overseas nations before us.
