Ólafur Arnalds – improvisation

Since I posted the original ‘improvisation’ video, recorded on tour in Porto in 2022, I’ve gotten hundreds and hundreds of messages asking for a recording of the solo piano version. A few weeks ago I got inspired and made one – and this week it’s out!

I notice a lot the contrast between your music, when you let yourself be carried away by your sensitivity, and that other different music when you play with technique or explore new sounds.

I'm happy that you explore, but when I get endlessly excited is when you let yourself be carried away by your sensitivity, where you also explore new ways of expressing yourself.

You are one of the best composers I have heard throughout my life. And you have a facility for expressing emotions through music that amazes me.

A sparse yet gentle piece by Olafur who is always on point with his beautiful compositions

I hear how you hold the piece of music in your head, and how you have a beautiful combination of breathing and repetition, all guided faithfully by your feeling. You pay attention to high and low frequencies, the calm and balance within, and you make sure that all of this keeps the rhythm incredibly tight. So beautifully done, Olafur! There’s no need to prove anything to the listeners, but rather a peaceful introspection… truly stunning!
And the most beautiful part is that you are probably not even aware of all these things… you are simply good at it, allowing us to enjoy it… and we truly do! Thank you...
