I used to work in film editing back then. This isn't actually correct. The countdown was silent and the tone only played on number 2. It was used to make sure the film and soundtrack were in sink. The tone was 1khz. It was called a "2 pop." When I was an assistant editor back then, it was my job to take the film and soundtrack for the previous day's shooting and sync then together. I had leader that I cut into the roll that was used for this purpose. Also, when the film was shot, the set recordist would put a tone on the track at the end of the take to let me know when the scene ended. Camera department would put a one frame "Flash" which was an over exposed frame at the end of the take. Then there were the clapboards that most people are familiar with. They were normally used at the head of the take. Sometimes at the end they were used and identified as tail markers.

Of course things would get busy an people would forget to mark things here and there so I would be stuck using other meathods to sync it up as well. Like looking for someone saying a "p" or looking for another noise that had a visual cue which together I could use as a makeshift clap board. Sometimes I just had to run it over and over in a moviola (editing machine) and move the track forward or back till the sync was right.

Back when we cut film workprints with razor blades and put them back together with tape lol
