Fly Tying Fox's Caddis Poopah (Pupa) Trout Fly - Ep123 Piscator Flies PF

The Fox's Caddis Poopah is a fly designed by fly tyer and angler Tim Fox sometime in the early 1990's for catching trout on the lower Sacramento River. The original fly has a few differences, mainly the hook (2302 TMC) and the use of UV resin to add some durability.

You can tie the fly in a number of color variations including olive/green, tan, orange, or chartreuse. Tim used vernille to create a tapered body and a pearl tinsel for the underbody. I use Ultra chenille and dark colored tinsels. Take the fly and modify it to your liking. Study the bugs in your streams and tailor the flies to match.

I have been doing well with a green rock worm, in # 16, This is just another variation of that. quick to tie, so you don't mind fishing where the fish are and losing a few bugs in the course of the day. My local streams are still running a bit high do to all the snow and rain we got in the latter part of March and April. On the other hand it has warmed up a bit, so our fishing should pick up in the coming weeks. Looks like we will also have good water levels right into July and August. The hatches have been put off by a few weeks. Saw a lot of winter black caddis, I think the week end is going to be great!

Chimo! Nice tutorial Darren. I've never tied this one, only the alpha & omega of the caddis cycle (egg and spent excluded ;-) Although I did read a long time ago of a tyer fishing miniscule egg patterns during some egg depositing, but I think it was a joke.
The grub hook gives this poopah a different look, I've seen it on a straight hook, and I had to look at a catalog because I never noticed it had antennae or a beard. Have you tried pearl core braid in place of the vernille? Cool PSA on playing with 🔥 fire, I think you hinted to that on the Sideshow Bob maggot cluster video ( I saw a different version of that pattern on I think fly fish USA channel, but your method was simpler and more effective, imo :-). And the best advice was in the description, modify - study - tailor 👍 BTW here's some deposits for the $tore & playlist vlog bank 🏦 Slim pickings at the $tore since we got the tubing but I picked up a duster made with white lamb's wool. At first I thought it was craft fur until I read the tag. Looks like it's on the hide, glued to a dowel forming a cylinder, like a fox tail. Over a foot long of 2" to 3" streamer hair. Then I got a spool of silver gray raffia. You probably have been there, the Limp 🐍 Cobra, had posted a legthy piece on everything you need to know on dubbing quite awhile ago. One of J Stockard's bloggers posted Firehole's new 718. Barbless natural bend hook, alternative to 200R or daiichi 1260. Well that's all I got, it's July in May! Cheers!

I’ve been tying this up with EZ magic dub for the body in my opinion this presents a more buggy appearance

Great looking fly. Would you fish this as a dropper? Cast it down and across?
