Avengers: Infinity War Ending Explained

Avengers Infinity War premiered this past weekend and its left people pretty shaken up. If you’ve seen the movie, the ending – and perhaps the whole plot – may have been a bit of a shocker. Thanos felt like the protagonist, with the Avengers acting more so as supporting characters, having been already fully introduced and developed from the previous MCU films. And – mega spoiler alert - Infinity War ended on a major cliff hanger – the villain emerged victorious, and half of our heroes were turned to dust, ceasing to exist. So what does it all mean? What was with Thanos chilling at the end? And what does this mean for the future of the MCU? Well, today we’ll be exploring all of these questions and more with our video on Avengers Infinity War Ending Explained!

The reason Dr Strange gave up the time stone, IMO, is because in that 1 timeline where he saw victory, he saw that Tony Stark was alive. If Tony Stark being alive is a requisite for victory over Thanos, then clearly allowing him to die means defeat - so Strange knew that even if it cost the time stone, he had to keep Stark alive.

Hell, that seems to have been the whole reason they included the scene of Strange looking at future outcomes. When it comes to (good) story writing, you don't randomly introduce elements 'just because'. If there's a scene, there's a reason for it. Sure, there'll be some scenes that are just comic relief or backstory - but you have to look at that scene with the future-viewing, and ask yourself "why was this included in the narrative?". It's so that Dr Strange breaking character (remember, he mentioned earlier he'd easily sacrifice Iron Man and Spider-Man to keep the stone safe - pretty grave!) and giving up the stone in order to save Stark makes complete sense, as opposed to being a "what, that's not in his character at all!" moment.

Honestly, it's my favourite moment in the movie. Somehow it's both pretty obvious and very subtle at the same time. Probably because Strange doesn't hit them over the head with his reasoning, saying stuff like "herp derp, I saw you alive in that victory timeline so I had to give it up!". No, it's up to the viewer to see the connection and put it together. It's not necessary if the audience misses it, but it gives a small information payoff to those that can put the pieces together.

"Should have gone for the head" was the best line.

Everyone in my theater went dead silent. not the type of silence where everyone except for a whispering person went silent, but DEAD silent at the ending. After it, I literally said "He did it, he really did it..."
