"Stranger in Town" is a hit song by American rock band Toto from their 1984 album Isolation. It was the first single released from that album, reaching the top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1984.[1] The song was the band's highest-ever charting Mainstream Rock track, eventually peaking at number 7. It was also a top 40 single in Australia, where it remains the fourth highest charting single by Toto, behind only "Hold the Line", "Rosanna", and "Africa".

Until today I was unaware of this track, (I'm 67) but yesterday I watched Whistle Down the Wind, which brought me here. Man, life works in mysterious ways, doesn't it?

I took a liking to Stranger In Town when it came out. I am not sure how I heard it, as it only went to #40 in Australia so it must have been on one of those "1984 - The "<insert something>" albums that came out every summer. I can remember seeing the video somewhere, it was well before Rage so probably on one of the music shows on the commercial networks. The video, made by Steve Barron ( look at this for an impressive list - "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, "Burning Up" by Madonna, "Summer of 69" and "Run to You" by Bryan Adams, "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits, "Electric Avenue" and "I Don't Wanna Dance" by Eddy Grant, "Let's Get Rocked" by Def Leppard, "Going Underground" by The Jam, "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League, "Baby Jane" by Rod Stewart, "Pale Shelter" by Tears for Fears, "Africa" by Toto, and "Take On Me" by A-ha) and the song itself are based on the 1961 British movie " Whistle Down the Wind" in which some farm children come across a fugitive who they think is Jesus.

The main character in the video is played by American actor Brad Dourif, who had a very familiar face to people and starred in the movie "Dune" which came out the same year. In fact Toto are actually on the movie soundtrack, though this song is not. In the music video, Dourif is on the run for murder in the US and travels to the UK as the songs lyrics state " the morning paper and the head-lines read, Danger to the queen, Buckingham Palace better tighten things up, The son of a bitch is mean".

Dourif teleports in to a barn tired and wet and wakes up to find that he has been discovered by some children who bring him food and water. After some discussion they are convinced that Dourif is Jesus and smuggle a copy of the bible out to him. Dourif reads the bible to the children and doesn't notice the police have closed in. As he is arrested in the barn doorway, the sun shines and Dourif holds his arms out in the shape of a cross.

Toto put out some great hits in the 70's and 80's but were having some serious issues in 1984 and fired lead vocalist Bobby Kimball after a lot of trouble with legal issues and drug problems. He had serious vocal issues during the recording of the album "Isolation", of which "Stranger In Town" was the first single.

The source file for this video is from the DVD "Toto. Past To Present 1977-1990: The Videos". I kept the original audio for 2 reasons, one being there is nothing wrong with it and 2, it is a bit customised so I would have had some creating to do.

The last video got me a $20 donation towards keeping a Youtube Premium subscription, can we do it again ? Edit : I actually got 2 donations ! The second was from someone who just found my channel, much appreciated.

Note that this video is banned worldwide on Youtube. I cannot guarantee how long it will stay public. I am hoping permanently, but be advised that I cannot guarantee that.

This is actually my favourite Toto track. I had never seen this video until visiting your channel. 'Don't change a thing' by Inxs brought me here. You have uploaded some seriously quality work. It must have taken you a shit load of time. I am curious, do you have an affinity for the songs in the video's you upload? Many thanks for all your efforts.

Also, Brad Dourif is the voice of "Chucky" in the "Childs Play" movie franchise.

Hi Austech, I think I also have that "TOTO-Past to Present" video compilation somewhere as well but this song, I never really took much notice of for some reason.
Then while I was adding songs to my Spotify playlist, after I added "Africa", "Rosanna" and "Hold the Line", I thought let me go through some of the other TOTO songs and see if I like or recognize anything else...alas "Stranger in Town" caught my ear straight away. So thanks again for putting this on Y.T but why is it banned TOTO want people to see it? Cheers.
