What Is Refractory Epilepsy? | Causes And Treatment | Medicover Hospitals

In this video Dr. B. Vinod Kumar, Consultant Neurosurgeon, Medicover Hospitals Nellore, has shared information on Refractory Epilepsy.

Seizures occur in people who have epilepsy. The nerve cells in the brain do not communicate properly during the Seizure. The brain's regular electrical activity will get disrupted. The Seizures can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes.
About one-third of patients with epilepsy will develop refractory epilepsy at some point. It indicates that medications do not perform well to control seizures.

Refractory Epilepsy Causes:
- Due to incorrect diagnosis
- Inappropriate treatment approaches
- Seizures that have been diagnosed but are not responding to the treatment approaches
- Despite the best treatment, lifestyle factors might have an impact on seizure control.

Refractory Epilepsy Treatment:
- If seizures are unable to control after trying two or three anti-epilepsy drugs, doctors might recommend brain surgery. It can help a lot if epilepsy only affects one side of your brain
