The reason why the pipe in 1-2 doesn't work half the time is because the screen needs to scroll far enough, similarly to 4-2 and 8-4 in the vanilla game. The problem is, when the scrolling stops, it can be at different pixels, and it needs to scroll the maximum amount for the pipe to work. If you compare 12:10 and 13:53, you can see that the screen scrolls 1 px further in the second clip.

1-3's random seeming blocks are Japanese characters saying ガンバレ (ganbare) meaning "try your best!", probably trying to hype you up for the difficulty of 1-4
