DJI Ronin RS3 Pro Review

DJI has a new flagship one handed gimbal, and we were able to take it for a test drive. It has some cool features, but are they worth the premium over the RS3 and older RS2? Jordan has an opinion (as always).

Hi. RS3 have a big issue.Have tried FPV mode? The roll axis doesn’t respond as fluid as the pan and tilt.It doesn’t respond to any adjustments of follow speed or dead band also.If you set a custom mode where you disable the pan axis and you leave the tilt and roll only, then the roll axis works fine.So it is some kind of a software issue where the pan and roll axis don’t get along well.

It'd be interesting to have your thoughts on the RS3 vs the old RSC2. I was very fond of that little guy.

I was a little doubtful about buying the previous version of the rs3 pro because i didnt knew if i could use a 70-200mm 2.8 ii from sony or the 200-600mm from sony, but with this im more hopeful. At least now im confident i can get the 70-200. Great review as always

I am still no video guy and not planning to become one either, but your videos are so good, I might end up turning into one anyway.

Yes, the RS3 in itself is an extra powerful device for any type of creator. There's a specific market for the RS3 Pro and its highly specialized features.

I just ordered the DJI RS3 Pro because my DJI Ronin S just simply cannot handle heavier lenses properly. Even my R5 caged with a RF 24-70 2.8L makes it cry..
Im planning on getting a C70 pretty soon as well so I want something capable of a lil more weight

I moved from the Crane 3S to the RS3 Pro, and for me it’s a tremendous improvement. The DJI is lighter, more compact, and provides smoother stabilization through a wider range of motion. And having a powered mount on my DigitalFoto Thanos rig, makes setup and breakdown quicker and makes powering the entire rig and camera off a v-mount, much less cluttered in terms of cable runs along the arm. The LiDAR module I will finally have early next week. And I am curious to see how much DJI has improved the focus algorithms from the 4D and whether I will find the extra $700 spent, worth the hole in the wallet. Fingers crossed.

Have you tested activetrack while shooting vertical or in portrait mode? Seems like this is a major failure of the RS3 Pro.

I've been using a 4D for a work project. I love the video quality and gimbal features, but the Lidar focus is horrible. It works ok unless there's bright sun or more than 15-20 feet away. I've tested it a little with my RS2 but would be wary to spend even more for it on the RS3.

Hi, Thanks a lot for this informative video -- I really liked the closeup shots of the gimbal so I could see the build quality. At this point, I am not sure whether it is best to keep my Zhiyun Crane 2 for the next few years or upgrade to the RS3 Pro. I have had the Zhiyun Crane 2 since 2018 and have been using it to make walking videos -- feel free to check them out on my channel. It is calibrated nicely to compensate for sudden turn movements (good amount of deadband). Though the micro jitters and z axis bounce movement can bother me sometimes -- especially on intense hikes.

I am wondering in your opinion whether it is worth it to upgrade from the Zhiyun Crane 2 to the DJI RS3 Pro?

You should be using Jordan at the preview image of this video. I thought it was product showcase not an your regular review. Was really not considering clicking. We want more Jordan! 😊

You shared some interesting points that none of the other 'fan-boy' reviews seem to have picked up on. Appreciating your reservations around the LiDAR system, do you know if the RS3 (non-Pro) can be used with the LiDAR to provide automatic focus-pull? Or is that only compatible with the PRO version?

The footage looks weird. Way too warm.

The wireless transmission sure is incredible, although costly. Would be great for professional use in major productions

The other reason to use the RS3 Pro is if you have accessories that use the expansion connectors, like Tilta Float.

Excellent review, as I am on the edge between the two new ones. I’m looking to get my first gimbal, and I’m only using a Panasonic S5 with a 24 to 70 most the time. But I’m looking to future proof as I would like to get a bigger rig at some point like the S1H whatever new variations of the the s series that comes out.

Great that you've mentioned the auto lock, very happy with the upgrade from RSC2 to the RS3! Meanwhile, RS3 Pro is next level for someone looking for more than just smooth stabilization and efficient shooting control.

Why afforable tripod than can do a bit tracking. So the tripod can pan a bit following a person.
