Sounds like the Weekly just agreed with Scott Morrison on something... you know you've messed up when that's happening 😂

Nice try Pickering. A little selective with the information. What you say is right but you’ve lied by omission. Murdoch’s businesses are losing readership and they have failed to change with the times and govt is trying to keep them happy. Whilst I think Google and Facebook do need managing/regulation it should be done for the benefit of the people not Murdoch. Disappointed that ABC would show such bias but it’s becoming normal.

I'm gonna say before watching this, that Charlie is FOR this bill because it benefits him. Even though it also benefits the Murdoch's more, but who cares about your morals when you get money.

'Australia makes our rules for things you can do in Australia'... since when did a select few people become a whole nation?

Would've liked to have seen the alternative viewpoint, possibly some negatives of the code, because there definitely are some.

Didn't realise the ABC had been brought out by Murdoch.

So, Facebook dropped Australian news from its website, and news outlets lost 13% of their traffic, so who needs who exactly? 🤔 Like someone once said "Tell 'em they're dreaming!"

News channels are run my multi billion dollar corporations, what the f are you talking about?
We choose not to watch the news from media outlets, maybe you should ask Australians what they want rather than deciding for us.

I thought this was stupid because it was based on the idea that Google is the only search engine.

Will this make media companies financially dependant on Google?

I can understand google being required to pay for the large snips they take. The summary box in particular is taking content directly, with the apparent intent that users won't care to click through. But why should that payment go exclusively to a handful of large commercial media companies? ABC won't get a cent, for example. Nor will that coffee shop.
On the other hand, I don't think google should be paying for the basic search results themselves. I would imagine that traffic on the media corporation websites would drop considerably if news companies didn't appear on search engines anymore. Intuitively, I would think that the basic results are a net benefit to news companies. (of course intuition isn't always right...)

I also can't see the sense in only google and facebook being hit by this. They aren't as popular sites, but similar features exist on other search engines, like Bing. Shouldn't they all be required to pay proportionately, if any of them are?

Nobody has ever read a news article without clicking in the news site
