Single-Task & FOCUS! Dr. Brynn's Brain-Based Productivity Boosters
We've covered in past episodes why 'multi-tasking' not only doesn't exist, but it is a productivity killer: the conscious brain is a serial (not simultaneous) processor and only does one thing at a time; multi-tasking is actually just 'code-switching'; every switch includes a refractory period where nothing gets done; constant code-switching increases stress, frustration and decreases productivity, satisfaction etc.
So this week, let's consider the merits of the opposite of 'multi-tasking': single-tasking and ensuring you're able to FOCUS!
I often tell audiences I speak to about brain-based motivation, productivity, peak performance: "If there's only one thing you take away from today, if there's one thing you remember or put into action, that should be to stop even attempting to 'multi-task' and instead take great strides (and pride!) in single-tasking for better focus"
If you have something important you'd like to put your best performance into, or you're struggling to get things done during your day, the best favor you can do yourself is to give yourself the time, space, opportunity to do one thing at a time - really focus, even for short-stints, and this will immediately improve both the QUALITY and QUANTITY of what you actually complete.
