In the Caribbean country of Haiti, armed gangs have been terrorizing the population for years. They kill and torture, intentionally burn houses down and kidnap people for ransom. It's forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.
A UN-backed security mission led by Kenyan police has been working to stabilize the country - but it seems the gangs are regaining strength. A recent spate of attacks in the Haitian capital uprooted thousands of people in a matter of days; a UN helicopter was attacked by gangs; two airlines have suspended flights. The Haitian Police says gangs could soon take control of the whole city. DW Correspondent Mariel Mueller travelled to Port-au-Prince to meet survivors of gang violence, and we interview Diego Da Rin from the International Crisis Group on why the Kenyan-led mission is struggling. And a warning: this story contains graphic descriptions of extreme violence.

Why a security mission led by Kenyan police is failing in Haiti ? This question is an insult to people intelligences. There are 15, 000 gang members and 30, 000 police force are required. At UN, 2, 500 police from Kenya are promise to send, but only 400 Kenyan police are sent. Who in the right mind would expect success ?

How could police from a state that cannot settle its own issues help another?

As a Kenyan, I didn't expect much from one of the most incompetent police "services" in the globe

The U.S. gave $300 million. Haiti got 400 police officers. That is $750, 000 per cop for no results. Gee, I wonder where the money went?

Kenyan police are good at dealing with unarmed civilians, they can't swim in such uncharted waters.

I think our kenyan police officers should just come back home. Why fight in a war that you dont understand, or dont have any business getting involved in? Haitians should solve their own disputes

"In a chaotic country, a strong leader, like Nayib Bukele in El Salvador, may be necessary to restore peace. Sometimes, achieving stability requires sacrifices, whether of certain freedoms, time, or even lives. Attempting to reason with those who fuel disorder, such as gangsters, fundamentalists, and extremists, may be ineffective. In response, some international observers, particularly from Europe, often label such leaders as dictators or accuse them of human rights abuses. However, in situations where public safety is at stake, decisive action might be needed.

Dominicans should never give an inch despite all the pressures to have the Haitian turmoil being dumped on them, ever.

The people that were sent in before harmed the citizens of Haiti, and the Haitians did not want more of the USA is a big player here I feel sad and frustrated for the people of Haiti who deserve to live in peace and safety!

The mission needs to be funded properly and reinforced with more troops. Peace for Haiti, peace for the world.

Haiti is a failed state and no country wants to lose troops in that chaos.

The title of this video is quite insulting to our Kenya Police, who have limited personnel and low funding. The Pentagon would need to provide more air support. Kenya shouldn't deploy any more officers if we're going to be blamed for a situation that will take decades to resolve. Even 20, 000 military personnel wouldn't make a difference. The issue is deeply rooted, and only the Haitians, willing to form their own army, can address it. If Kenya Defence Forces were to intervene, it would be seen as a colonial occupier, requiring martial law for decades as the economy rebuilds. Protecting their sovereignty isn't Kenya's responsibility and clear not under the mandate of our military let alone obligation. At least KDF wasn't deployed, just imagine all the blames if things went south. The Police can only do so much, and it makes sense for them to simply patrol without taking unnecessary risks. Large-scale military deployment is needed for such tasks. I also commend our Canadian government for declining to intervene on the ground.
